Ever After (1998)
A Diane du Pothers bio?
This is supposed to be the true story of the Cinderella myth, of a young girl who married the dauphin. I supposed that this is inspirited in the Diane (Danielle?) du Pothers life, a cult dame who became the mistress (not the wife who was the famous Catherine of Medicis) of Henri II the Valois, who rule the country with him until his death in 1558. The movies recreates very well the Renacimiento ages, that includes one of the most prominent figures Leonardo Da Vinci. But there is too much boring dialogue, Danielle looks too much strong and the historical failures are evident.(for example the Spanish dynasty was a German family so they were thin and blond, not like Cuban refugees, or Thomas More wrote Utopia only five years before Da Vinci Disease, so how Danielle could read that book when she was a child, Queen Mary was Charles the V sister, and was the step mother not the mother of the dauphin, also I can not remember if France have lands in America at that time etc). I prefer one hounded more time Disney magical and charming movie, thing that here does not appear. However the cast was good. The best performance was made by Angelica Houston, a very versatile actress who needs more important roles. There is also good Dougray Scott as the prince, and in her little moments Melanie Lynskey (the perfidy girl of Heavenly Creatures). Even I still think that Kate Winslet was the best option for the role, Drew Barrymore looks beautiful, and her performance is not bad, more than that she convinced as the goody heroine, this movie is a kind of lucrative Hollywood redemption to an ex bad girl. I give to this boring movie a three for their performances and the age reconstrution..
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
another tim burtun movie
This another master piece made by Tim Burton. This movie is not only a good one because it was a Burton movie, it is unforgettable because of the plot, that combined successfully this romantic horror fantasy with an Agatha Chrisitie's detectivestic novel, and because of that I've enjoy the movie The acting is good, specially for the leading cast couple and for the villains Richardson and Walken (in his 45 secconds). The only think that I don't like is that, even has burtonians elements, also have the executive producer Coppola puppeteers from the battle scenes Dracula. I've love Dracula, i love this movie, but that scene was disgusting. I give an 8
Urban Legend (1998)
Alicia Witt saves the money
This is another daughter of the scream maniac. Even though the movie is predictable and not very realistic, it scared me. It's a scary movie, and as a scary movie works well. The director is very good to help this movie from a silly script. However he is not a actor director; despite the fact that elder actors do well their jobs (specially Neville), most of the young cast is horrible. From the insupportable Joshua Jackson with a horrible hair to Jared Letto (I've only see him acting well in G.I.). Only the leading roles were well. Rebecca Geyrheart overacts, but her performance is the second best of the young cast. The best performance come from the sensible Alicia Witt, she has a wonderful talent and bright and paled face that the director know how to employ it successful. Probably Witt is the best heroine of this late ninety trash movies. She is much better actress than Neve Campbell, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Love Hewitt. This red hair actress is the Glenda Jackson of the scary movies.Becauser her performance this is a movie that I can recommend.
Suspicion (1941)
a little master piece wth my favorite Hitchcock's blond girl
This as is an old fashioned movie, about a tiny country heiress who fall in love with a charismatic playboy, who could be not only a murder but also she could be his next victim. This is consider a minor film, but despite the fact that the topic and the movie seems today old , the film is pretty , the photograph is beautiful , it has a grate suspense and you can feels Lina desperation. At the end of the movie, Cary Grant kill his wife, but later producers change the end, so because of the new end, some people considered Suspicion as a minor piece. From my personal point of view it is one of the British Director more subvalorated films This movie was important for Cary Grant, he won his first Oscar nomination, he made here the transition from being a comedian to being respectable character actor, and also was his first collaboration with the master of suspense. In the movie was excellent as the charming aristocrat who prefer murder someone to find a job. Joan Fontaine (at that time with Bergman, David O. favourite actress) is believable as the neurotic and placid wife, she deserved the Oscar from Rebecca and her job here justified her Oscar. She is my favourite Hitchcockorean blond girl, because she seems more human than the other actresses, that they are cold , she is not, her performance is lively. Sorry Grace and Ingrid you are grate actresses but I prefer Ms De Havilland. I could not understand why in Hitch one hundred years, moviemakers and critics prefer to invite Tippi Hedren and Janet Leigh as Sir Alfred's vocers, than these wonderful Japanese-British actress, that from my point of view have more interesting details of Hitch life than Melanie and Jamie moms, specially relation with the master of suspense relationship with Selznick and with Alma. To sum up, even these movie now at days seem old fashion, so is impossible to make a loyal remake, But movie still magical with some romance, well create tension moments and excellent performances I hope that one day I will see the original end
La reine Margot (1994)
great theatrical adaptation
The adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas novel, of the ninfoman france princess who found sense and love as a consequence of a protestant massacre four day after her wedding, is terrific, it is gorgeous and renacentist.
The director creates an excellent atmosphere of palace intrigues. The movie has also crude scenes with lot of gore. Most of the cast is incredible Isabelle Adjani is maybe one of the most beautiful women that I´ve seen in the screen. Because her mysterious and ethereal beauty you could believe that is the 19 year princess. But maybe this time was too ethereal. There were four amazing performances by Virna Lissi excellent as the powerful regent Catherine of Medicis (I would not like to being his child), Jean Hughes Anglade as the king of france, Daniel Autiel as Navarre and The strange beauty of Dominique Blanc. Also there were good Vincent Peres, Asia Argento, and the guy that plays Henri Valois
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
A TRUE MASTERPIECE!!!
The best horror movie of the nineties, a masterpiece created by Francis Ford Coppola and J.V.Hart, based on Bram Stoker's homonym novel. This movie has everything: mystery, romance, black humour, sex, beautiful women, death, literature, religion, history, controversy, screams, blood, costumes, special effects, make up, gorgeous places, scary sound track, great and mesmerising epoque reconstruction, social drama and even is a very terrifying one. With excellent performances by Anthony Hopkins, Sadie Frost, a non exaggerated but multifacetic Gary Oldman as the torturated count (where is your oscar?) , and a never more neurotic Winona Ryder in her first "19 century" movie as Dracula's victim I think that Ms Ryder is the center of the movie and has the most difficult character, and she play terrible well this innocent and victorian girl, with her charisma and that beautiful brown eyes movement that only she can do, and of course her beautiful dark hair, who remembers me other heavenly actress of the glory past such as A.Herpurn, N.Wood, O.Hussey and I.Adjani. Also good performances by K.Reeves, C.Elwes and R.E.Grant. Dracula was the first and best big horror gothic production of all the United States filmography history. The others like "Interview with the vampire" and even the "Mommy" there were not as inspired, romantic, clever and of course terrifying as this cult movie. It is my favourite movie
The Nanny (1993)
I'll really miss you, Fran
Maybe this sitcom was not very popular in United States, but this is the favorite TV series in the rest of the world. Because it is funny and smart and all people, from Tokyo to Asuncion, from all over the world are touched by Fran hart (and voice). Who can't forget her famous shouts! (-Mr. Sheffield- or -Maa-). Miss Fine has the same problems and ambitious of the ordinary people, and that makes her character universal. The final episode was really emotive and appropriate (was the first time that I enjoy a B. Straisand's song). I've seen it today and was the first time in years that I cry. Fran Drescher and the sitcom deserve an Emmy. Her performance and charisma was ignored several times by the Emmys. God don't ignore her again.
Braveheart (1995)
boring, boring, boring, without a plot
Maybe the best epic picture was Spartacus, and the best movie about the middle age was El Cid with Charlston Heston. That movie was brilliant and well done with a script plenty of intrigue. This is a long, long, long, long movie with NO SCRIPT ( It is difficult to believe that Queen Elizabeth grandpa was William Wallace, and the non sense romantic ghost story puaj), with the same horrible Mel Gibson performance of Hamlet. The only point in favor is the well done fight scenes. I can't understand how people could think that is the best picture ever made. I still think that El Cid despite the years is a much more better and entertaining movie. To sum up, I think that the main problem of this movie is the inexistence of a script and a plot
The Last Days of Pompeii (1984)
the first mini that I enjoy
I´ve first seen in 1985, and was the first time that a movie touch my heart, then I read the book and I think that the traslation to the movie is very difficult, but Peter Hunt give us a masterpiece. The adaptation is amazing, and the cast is excellent specially by the beauty from Argentinian actress Olivia Hussey as Ione and Franco Nero as the the cruel Arbaces the Obscure.
I recommend as one of the best mini-series of all time.
