Disapponited
22 March 2006
After reading many, many books on the Bounty, and seeing the 1984 version of the movie, I anxiously looked forward to the 1935 academy award-winning version. However, I was a little disappointed. The characters are much more one-dimensional than the 1984 version. Some of the historical facts are totally incorrect, and it didn't seem to have quite the atmosphere of the '84 rendition. Not bad, but a little disappointing after having high hopes. The acting and effects were good for its time, and it goes a bit further into the story than the '84 version, but overall I still prefer seeing Anthony Hopkins' multi-dimensional Cpt. Bligh.

Distracted by boom microphones.
12 October 2004
A great drinking game for this movie (when it appears on DVD): Every time you see a boom mic, take a drink!

The movie was OK, at times, but mainly predictable and clichéd, but perhaps I did not really notice, since I was noticing and seeing microphones everywhere... then was distracted by watching other people in the theatre notice them and point laughing.

Maybe it would be better to drink before the movie, so that way you can get through it without worrying about paying the money for a sloppily made movie.

I gave it a 5 out of 10... it was OK at times and had potential but in general was inadequate.

Disappointed - Spoilers
31 October 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers

Seeing "Aliens" listed in the imdb's top 250 made me look forward to watching it, but in the end I was somewhat disappointed. Do people think cool effects is the only criterion to a great film?

For one, the "best marines" were unprofessional - complaining about every order, refusing to give up their ammo at one point, and having a lack of respect for the expert Ripley.

I also found there were too many cliches in the movie - Ripley having a change of heart while staring at herself in the mirror. How many times have we seen that in a movie?

Some of Burke's actions were also inconsistent. He seemed to do too much to show his true intentions - something he should not have wanted to reveal.

Some great effects and exciting action, but also some problems.

Fantastic Opening
27 May 2002
My most favourite part of this great movie is the opening scene during the credits. There's very little dialogue, but the sounds and the camera shots tell the story and give you a atmosphere not often felt during movies. It's too bad more directors don't follow Sergio's lead here and give their films so much feeling and atmosphere. All done with a fly, dripping water and some creaking wood. To end the fabulous opening, the line "No. You brought two too many!", gives you an suspenseful anticipation of what is to come next.

My favourite western movie by far.

Had potential to be even better.
6 May 2002
Although this movie had good suspense and action, it could have been even better than it was. It fell into the trap that many silly action movies fall into - that their main character is a superhero, able to outrun machine gun bullets and grenades. Thousands of bullets hit inches around the hero, yet none touch him. We have seen that a hundred thousand times before, and it gets sillier every time. If this had been toned back - or eliminated - the movie could have been excellent. Some of the action sequences were directed in a unique way and the cinematography was excellent. However the problems above make me give it a 7, no higher.

There's something about genitalia.
6 May 2002
Are jokes about genitals still funny? We've seen the man get hit "where it counts" enough in movies (and in life) for it to have lost its humour. Let's see something new. I guess there are enough people with a pubescant maturity level to find a lot of this funny. There were many other nice parts and funny parts in this film, but an overabundance of "let's laugh because it's down there" gags bring it down. I guess the film decided if they can't think of a new humourous situation then they should refer to the genitals and that would be good enough. 5 out of 10.

The movie is too silly, unintelligent and childish for adults, and there is too much swearing for kids, so there really isn't an audience for it. The tv version that has the bad words dubbed out would be ok for kids, and I am sure they would enjoy the movie. I was neither for or against it, so it gets a middle of the road 5.

Pleasantly Surprised
17 April 2002
I thought "oh no - another dumb teen movie", but I was pleasantly surprised. The main character is extremely likable, and you can feel sorry for her plight - once you get over her superficiality she appears to have at the beginning. I am not usually a fan of such movies, but found this one to be acceptable. (Then again maybe it's because I watched the horrible "All the pretty horses" just before viewing this and anything would have looked good.)

Boring two hours
17 April 2002
All I could think through this was "who cares?" or "so what?". I had no sympathy for the characters - they caused their own trouble -and even if they did not there was not much to make me care about what was happening. Not worth the effort to watch.

Could have been better than what it was
2 January 2002
As some users have commented, the crude jokes were a bit much, and indeed they were. They were quite out of place in the movie - it was almost like watching two different movies at once - not in a good way. There was quite a bit of needless dialogue and interaction, almost all of it dealing with the crudeness and offensive jokes mainly directed at women.

The other parts of the movie were not bad, and I wish there was more of them. The interaction with the father could have been expanded, as well as the brother. The scenes with Jessica were good, and the baseball scenes were ok, and quite well made. Unfortunately, the plot was a bit predictable, with my girlfriend shouting out what she thought would happen next, and she was always right. The crude parts and predictable plot drag the rest of the movie down. I debated whether to give it a 4 - thinking I slightly disliked it, or if I was neutral and would give it a 5. In the end, it had to be 4.

A Scathing Critique
12 August 2001
This movie was bad. How could the characters be so stupid? How could the writers and director think the audience could be so stupid? I was never scared, never felt freaked-out, never felt any suspense. All I felt was - "that is stupid". Even some of the special effects were a bit rough. 3 out of 10 from me.

The Canadian Conspiracy (1986 TV Movie)

Wish there had been a sequel.
21 June 2001
The Canadian Conspiracy was a great satirical-type comedy played serious, which not only entertained but was thought provoking, but not to too deep a level. I really wish there had been a sequel a number of years later when Wayne Gretzky went to Los Angeles and Mike Myers et al began their "invasion" of the U.S. The possibilities then would have been endless.

Waste of time
9 April 2001
I found this movie to be a colossal waste of time. It is three-quarters into the movie before you realize there is a plot, and not much of one at that. If I were a woman I would be offended - three guys teach women how to be better women. Not much entertainment here.

Confusing bit of nonsense
9 April 2001
Confusing piece of work. I was not sure what was happening or why at many places. People seem to jump around - and scenes flash by - as if the editing was all wrong. I saw the hacked-up cut-down video version, but from comments I have seen the full-length version does not make much more sense. Didn't scare or entertain me - just confuse and make me wonder why I bothered.

Dr. No (1962)
9/10
One of the important films of all time
9 April 2001
How many films spark a 20+ long series of blockbuster movies? How many films propel a literary character into the realm of cultural icon? Well, Dr. No did this. Connery's performance was hugely under-rated and appreciated at the time. His delivery of "Bond, James Bond" made that simple quote into one of the famous movie quotes ever. (It was not in the books before that.) I consider the opening gun barrel sequence to be the best of all Bond films, and Dr No, one of the best villains. 9 out of 10 from me.

Great if you need a good sleep.
5 October 1999
This one was a real snoozer. The dialogue was silly. I assume it was supposed to be deep and intelligent, but it made little sense, was awkward and made the characters look dumb. The ending was completely predictable. Why I sat through the whole thing knowing what would happen is beyond me. Good thing I watched it on TV and had the commercials to entertain me.

Grand Prix (1966)

A must-see for all Formula One fans.
30 July 1999
If you are a racing fan, then this movie is a must. The in-car camera shots are amazing, and put to shame the pictures we get today, from real races with modern technology. It serves as a great historical piece, with wonderful shots of the old Spa circuit and the oval banking at Monza. The effects are amazing. They somehow made it look like James Garner was actually driving the car, with another car buzzing behind him. The crash scenes are very spectacular. In terms of the story, it is OK, and improves greatly during the last race, where flashbacks are featured on each driver, and the suspense builds. It`s probably best seen on the biggest screen you can find.

My favourite Bond movie; it`s pure espionage!
8 July 1999
Without question, this is my favourite Bond movie. It contains none of the gimmicks and far-fetched story-lines that some of the others contain. It`s pure espionage at its best. Bond is tempted to Istanbul by the opportunity to get a Lektor decoder, made available by a beautiful Russian clerk. She thinks she is working for the Soviet Union, but is in fact being tricked into providing it by SPECTRE. An intricate plot develops and we wonder if Bond`s judgement is perhaps influenced (negatively) by the beautiful Russian he is maybe falling for. From the exciting and unique opening, to the final scene this movie gripped me. Kerim Bey makes a very likeable and intelligent sidekick for Bond, and the villains are very strong. Robert Shaw is great as Red Grant. He has a remarkable presence in the movie even though he does not say a word in its first half. Rosa Klebb is eerie, and perhaps the strongest female Bond character in the entire series. Some people consider the fight scenes to be the best in the Bond series, and the action scenes are wonderful. Connery is brilliant, and even non-Bond fans can love this film.

Alastair Sim is brilliant!
8 July 1999
How or why Alastair Sim did not receive an academy award or nomination for his portrayal of Ebeneezer Scrooge is beyond me. Sim makes Scrooge a multi-dimensional character. Can you hate, love, feel sorry for and admire a character all at once? With Sim, you can. Unlike many Scrooges, which make the turn from evil to good look either like a superficial paint job, or else a miraculous change more akin to Jekyll and Hyde, Sim makes you understand and believe that Scrooge can change. The rest of the characters are fine, Tiny Tim is very likeable, and the story (which we all know) is wonderful. I must watch this movie every Christmas, and often bring it out at other times of the year when I need some inspiration. A great movie!
