Mystic River (2003)
Disappointing ending
Spoilers
Sean Penn provides a heap of anguish and anger, but the plot just didn't pull together enough to deserve a very high rating. I found it interesting up to the last quarter of the movie, despite my having a difficult time understanding a lot of the mumbled Boston accented dialog (maybe the DVD will have captions) but the ending was a big disappointment, killing your childhood friend for a crime he didn't commit is apparently OK by everyone (widow included). Laura Linney's speech about how it was supportive of his little girls for him to murder an innocent man was just goofy. Too damn long also. I am mystified at the high overall rating of this movie.
Vendetta (1999)
Is it history?
This was a fairly interesting historical drama, but the portrayals were so black and white that the story seemed improbable to me. I suspect the true story is a bit more "gray" than the movie suggests. Our politically correct society allows these one sided views only when the "white anglo saxon protestant" male is the villain.
Battle of the Bulge (1965)
A morality play posed as history.
An absurd movie with winter tank battles in the forests of Northern Europe taking place in a bare desert. The evil Nazi who loves war for the sake of war is done in by his determination to extend the battle. Telly Savalas thinks he's in "Kelly's Heros".
