Goodfellas (1990)
pure movie magic
i just wanted to add that it's disturbing how all the people like the movie for its "realism", "real-life story", etc. at its heart, this movie is a triumph of the art of cinema with its fluidity, imagination and professionalism. you could really sense scorsese standing next to you when you watch "goodfellas".
but is it better than "the godfather"? almost certainly.
Mr. Stitch (1995)
some of the best dialogue ever heard
yes, it's true. whatever flaws this movie has, it deserves to be seen because of its incredibly imaginative dialogue. it really does. ...
Aliens (1986)
good action, but totally betrays the idea
cameron's version is, of course, a very good action movie and even has its artistic moments (which is unusual for jim), but there is a big problem. as we know, the alien fans community is divided into two: "aliens" fans (who love "aliens") and "alien" fans (who love "alien", "alien3" _and_ "resurrection"). i must say that "aliens" is a complete loss for the original idea. the original "alien" idea was that humans are fragile and can be destroyed by their _fear of the unknown_ - the _fear_ alone, not the aliens as creatures. this is the depth that "aliens" lacks, but ideas as such are essential to the cinema as an art form. shooting at aliens won't solve any humane problem.
Animals with the Tollkeeper (1998)
an independent film fan's dream
it's one of those unknown gems that just stand there and wait to be discovered. intelligent, sensitive, wise, artistic, funny, weird... excellent.
what? at least four lines per comment? well, here they are:
some movies should be seen, not talked about. the surprise in this case is very important. just see it.
