Man on Fire (2004)
Best Action Drama of the Millennium
Character development is flawless. Denzell Washington as John Creasy is a tragic but endearing ex government operative who has fallen into a suicidal alcoholism, and questioning his very existence. While employed by a Mexican family as a bodyguard for a delightful nine year old girl, Creasy, begins to emerge, and enjoy life again. When the inevitable kidnapping takes place, and Creasy is almost mortally wounded, he vows in a poignant scene with the young girl's mother to bring justice to those who were involved in any way with the crime. Beautiful Radha Mitchell as the mother gives a moving performance , and Dakota Fanning as the kidnapped girl is superb. More kudos to Giancarlo Giannini as Mexico's top cop, Rachel Ticotin as a reporter bent on breaking the hold that corrupt police have in Mexico City, and Christopher Walken as Creasy's friend. This is a long but intriguing drama with plenty of action after the first hour.
A Shot in the Dark (1964)
Best of Clouseau
In this one Sellers is at his his best as the bumbling inspector. Great cast. If you've never seen it, and you like slapstick, you will fall off your seat laughing. Young Elke Sommer is delicious, George Sanders is delightfully bored, and Herbert Lom is hilarious as Clouseau's boss.
Heartbreak Hotel (1988)
Very cute Elvis story. Tuesday Weld wonderful as the mother.
Good acting. Suspend belief, and enjoy an original story of the King being kidnapped for a teen's mother who is down in the dumps in a small Ohio town though who wouldn't be in a small Ohio town. 1988 movie. Big question is where is the lovely mid fiftyish Tuesday Weld now?
Pale Rider (1985)
One of top 3 or 4 cowboy movies ever made.
Hero cowboy, Eastwood is at his best in this mystical story of a Preacher who saves a town. The character development of the "Preacher" keeps you guessing. Is he an angel or what? Compare Eastwood's cowboy here to his role in Civil War epic, The Outlaw Josie Wales which is the best Eastwood film ever made.
Prince Valiant (1997)
Magnificent storytelling.
Terrific movie. Never heard of it until I saw it on cable. Almost as good as the Princess Bride. Should have had wider release. Wish I had seen it in the movies. Great for the kid in all of us. Katherine Heigl is an absolutely beautiful princess, and Stephen Moyer is superb as Valiant.
