Made (2001)
a great break for this summer's crap-o-thon
I'm basically going to repeat what "porkey" said in his review of the film. I'm a huge Swingers fan and was afraid this movie would run on the now-popular status of Swingers. I was also knocked flat on my ass. Vince Vaughn is absolutely amazing. Peter Falk was perfect. Puff Daddy was also great as Ruiz (I really can't believe I just said that, but it's true). John Favreau did an excellent job as writer/director. I was really impressed with the character he wrote for himself and how he decided not to be preachy (the way that most movies do in order to blatantly point out that the characters are sooooo noble/brave/etc). There was also some great one-liners ("you've turned this easter egg hunt into a butt-f**k-a-thon"), and memorable scenes (in the airplane). There's also one incredibly memorable scene with Dustin Diamond, I think it might be the best used cameo of all time. An A+ movie through and through.
Nurse Betty (2000)
a documentary of the actors eating lunch would have been a better movie
I consider myself an avid movie watcher. Even with movies I don't like I can hopefully recognize something good about a movie. This can not be said for Nurse Betty.
It is arguably the worst movie I have EVER seen. I would compare the dialogue, plot, and humour to that of "Dead Man on Campus" (which my friend only rented because Zack Morris was in it). I found myself sitting in the theatre trying to find humour where there was none, style where there was none, even good performances, but there just wasnt.
On the topic of bad movies, Gene Siskel used to say "a documentary of the actors eating lunch would have been a better movie". That would be true in this situation.
Belly (1998)
horribly underated but could have used a rewrite and better casting
I wasn't going to watch Belly after reading all the terrible reviews it got but then a film student I know told me to watch it so I took a chance on it. And was I suprised, Hype Williams is remarkable. Great cinematography. Unfortunately the casting wasn't the best and the story could have used some changes. I understood the story rather easily but Ox (the jamacan drug lord) needed a translator. Anyways, if you like movies about street life and enjoy hiphop, I recommend.
