The Exorcist (1973)
Very good and misunderstood
I just saw the re-release of this incredible movie on DVD with the added scenes and the commentary by the director and think it is one of the best movies I have seen. When I first saw this movie years ago I found it goofy but that was because my first exposure to it was in a spoof by Mad magazine. Well years later I rented the movie again and and that time I was spooked. It's a great story that I think is totally misunderstood.
Now I haven't read the book, though I'm planning on it, but I believe the main character of this movie is Father Damien Karras. The movie is really about his loss of faith in God.
(!!SPOILERS!!) With his mother's death, and all the other problems he faces daily as a priest, he no longer believes that God is there or, if God is there, that God cares about us. The possession of Regan is supposed to return his faith in God.
At first he doesn't believe in the possession as the scientific side of him wants to go along with the doctors and chalk it up as a psychiatric problem. Slowly though he begins to see the signs that this child is indeed possessed. He believes it so much that in the end he is willing to sacrifice himself for the child.
(--end of SPOILERS--)
If you've seen this movie, re-released or otherwise, and weren't scared or thought it was awful, please see it again not for a gruesome horrorfest that many believe it to be, but for a stimulating journey of belief and for psychological terror. I rate it a 9 out of 10.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)
Not bad but too long (contains spoilers)
I recently rented this movie and thought the cast, acting and story were very good. I feel the main problem is that the movie was too long to keep me interested. I kept wanting it to move along at a quicker pace.
Cusak, Spacey, and most of the rest of the cast did an excellent job of making me interested in the characters even the minor ones. All the eccentricities of these people made it watchable and some of the dialog is very funny and off beat. Yet while all of that was good I was still waiting for something important to happen in some of the scenes.
(Spoiler) One other bad point was the end of the movie. I felt if it had ended at the funeral it would have been much better. I don't see why they had to make Cusak's character (Kelso) "get the girl". It just seemed too cliched and so unneeded. I wouldn't have minded the movie being so long had they ended it with Jimmy, Spacy's character, getting what he deserved.
Overall I give this movie a 7 out of 10 mainly for the characters and the dialog.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
Great Klowns, stupid movie
I just saw this again with my wife on the Sci-fi channel and it's a stupid movie but something about those alien clowns makes me want to watch it. The acting is horrible and story is pretty lame but the way the clowns look and act saves this from being a really bad horror movie and turn it into something interesting to watch. I give this a 5 out of 10 but still reccommend it to the die hard bad horror movie fans out there.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Best of the Best
I'm a big fan of Lucas' and Spielberg's works and this is without a doubt their best work to date. From the banter between Indy & Marrion to the action sequences to the whole history behind the Ark make this a truly incredible film.
The chase scene that starts when Indy steals the horse then chases down the Nazi envoy and eventually steals back the Ark is in my opinion THE BEST ACTION SEQUENCE EVER!!! (And I've seen quite a few action movies)
This is a film that I can watch time and time again and never get tired of. From the acting to the action to the special effects I really can't find a flaw with this movie. On a scale of 10 I'd give it 11.
