Classic Scifi
May be spoilers below Wow... amazing movie and classic scifi. Everything about this movie was very well done. At only 90 minutes its short, but everything is very tight.
My wife had a hard time understanding the movie at first because it is almost completely told from the main characters point of view. There is not intro or build up as some movies do. The movie simply starts and you have no idea what is going on because the main character, played by Jake, also has no idea what is going on.
As Jake figures things out more of the plot presents itself. I can see how some people would not like this, you will be confused at first. But as a scifi fan I was able to figure out what was going on rather early which allowed me to really enjoy how the story was told in the movie.
All in all you should see this movie. It reminded me of a very good TNG episode in the way it was told.
My Generation (2010)
Interesting idea, but bad on execution
Interesting idea, but bad on execution So here is the deal I graduated in 1999 one year before the students on this show. I decided to watch the first episode of this show because I thought it would be interesting to see how they setup people about my age who are 10 years out from high school.
Unfortunately, this show is just bad. Its very slow, its boring, and you learn where everyone is in their life 10 years later (which is the first episode) I can not image why else I would continue watching this show.
I would recommend passing on this show.
Terminator Salvation (2009)
OK film... but the ending killed it.
Spoiler Warning This movie had so much potential, and actually did some things well, but then the ending ruined it. First I think Marcus as the main character really worked well. I enjoyed getting to know his character, and I felt many of the early scenes did it well. I also liked how he was confused but clearly very bright and knew what to do. I also liked the later scenes where he questioned what he was somewhat and eventually rejected what he learned.
John Conner on the other hand was just a (they made me delete the word here)in the entire movie. It was clear the movie was never supposed to be about him and when Bale forced the issue all we got was crap. Then the ending was just awful. Spoiler ahead – When Marcus chose to give up his life for John I was just wanted to walk out. What an awful ending. I mean I expected Marcus to die, and I am OK with that but not to save Conner. He does not deserve to be saved in this movie. I would rather see two more movies with Marcus and very little John.
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)
This is a kids movie
I give this movie a 5 because I can not get over how many people die in this movie. It is amazing how if you do not have any blood you can get away with so much violence at the PG rating. This is just too violent for the audience it is targeting as far as I am concerned. I would not take my kids to see it.
As the scene in the end with the mouse. So we just had this battle where thousands of humans just died, but thats all OK because we managed to save the one mouse.
I know some people may make the comment that the Lord of the Rings was very violent, but it was never trying to be a kids movie either.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
I can not believe some people actually thing this is a good movie
As I read through all the reviews here on the site I am surprised by the number of people who thought it was a good or even OK movie. Did we see the same film?
The entire computer generated thing was very original and turned out very well. The visuals were excellent especially in New York. I was also a big fan of the whole 1930's but yet not theme. It reminded me of Batman the animated series.
However the spectacular visuals hardy make up for the other huge downfalls of the movie. First off being that the plot made little sense as a whole. I felt that scenes were very disconnected, especially at the beginning of the movie. I also felt that the actually plot of the movie could have been summed up in a paragraph, but was dragged out into an entire movie.
The acting and dialogue was also horrendous. The writing was very dry, and the characters were not very well developed. I never felt like I was a part of the movie, or got to know the characters and understand who they were.
And did anyone else notice that Polly changed clothes, but then later in the movie she was suddenly back in the same clothing she was in at the beginning of the movie? Come on now, that is something I wouldn't even expect from a college student working on their first film project.
Dersu Uzala (1975)
Pure Genius
Before today I never heard of this film, and I only watched it because I was required to for a college course. In fact while watching the movie I found it rather boring. It was only by the end of the movie and through analyzing the film that I have come to discover its pure genius. This movie is a work of Art. The landscapes are amazing and the interaction between the captain and Uzala are in creditable. Add on top of that an amazing underlying story and an ending that unfortunately, correctly sums up the movie perfectly. In today's society there is no place for someone of Uzala's character.
Pure Genius
Underworld (2003)
Great idea little Plot
Why does it seem like the entire plot to this movie was writen on the back of a napkin. One day the guys who wrote the film must have been like wouldn't it be cool to do Romeo and Juliet with Vampires and guns. And that pretty much sums up the whole plot.
Such a waste of a good idea. This movie could have been so much more...
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Good actiom... no plot
The Matrix reloaded. it can basically be summed up as good action sequences and no plot. Much like most other action moves that come out today. Now don't get me wrong the action sequences were some of the best I have seen, however that was all there really was.
The movie basically said the same thing over and over again. There is no such thing as choice. We are all driven by fate. Only Neo may or may not have the capability to grow beyond fate and become in control of his own choices. It seems like a good idea except that they kept telling us this over and over again.
The Architect for example basically said nothing we did not already know or could have figured out. He just used a lot of big words so it he would sound intelligent. In fact that's pretty much what everyone else did too. They dragged out two word concepts (no choice) into crappy monologues.
I was very disappointed in the plot of this movie. It was very thin and showed little real creativity. Go see this movie. but be warned it might suck.
24 (2001)
There is not a word good enough to describe 24
24 is honestly the best show I have ever watched on TV. In fact few, if any, movies can compare.
I never watched the show on tv but instead I bought the DVD set becasue it came highly recomended. I soon found that my entire life for the next few days reloved around the show. I didn't sleep, I didn't go out, I could not stop watching the show.
Everyone who likes suspence and wants to watch something that is truly original should watch 24. You will soon find that your life will revolve around watching the show as well.
I can't wait till season 2 comes out on DVD.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Good, but there were a few problems
Overall I though AOTC was an excellent film, much better then the first film and easily on par with the other 3 Star Wars films. The ending sequences were some of the best, and most entertaining of any movie I have seen. The storm trooper drop ships, and that entire battle, reminded me of Black Hawk Down. In fact I like how the storm troopers in ATOC seem much more like a cohesive military force.
The main problem I had with ATOC was the entire romance between Anakin and Amidala. The dialogue was terrible, so bad that I could not watch what was going on at times. There was just no chemistry between them. The entire relationship, from Amidala's, point of view was completely unbelievable and entirely too forced.
Magnolia (1999)
A great fresh new movie
This movie was one of the best movies I have ever seen. A lot of people complain that this movie lacked a real plot or storyline and I have seen some reviews that say the characters are not well developed. Well this movie did not intend to do any of that. It was basicly a slice of life and each character had their own story. A lot of "good" movies out there are good because they tell a good story. Saving Private Ryan tells a very good story of epic proportions, but Magnolia is so much better because it does not do these things. It tells a story about average people who make mistakes, average people in which you can relate to. This is a much needed change to other heroic almosy super human characters in other movies. One of the best parts of this movie is its ending. While it has no real ending each character is given a secound chance at fixing their life. Overall Magnolia is the best movie I have seen in a long time and is well deserving of an Oscar for best picture.
