Once a Thief (1996)
Lacking in almost every way...
I rented this movie because I thought Woo and Lea were cool, and I was wondering what the results would be when they paired up. Well the results were horrible: The plot was uninteresting and completely unbelievable, the dialogue was absolutely horrible, and the actors werent good enough to save it. Despite my admiration for the two mentioned above, I can't pull myself to even saying that this movie was acceptable; it was just plain bad. If you get it, then you'll regret having spent that $2 on renting it.
The Sum of Us (1994)
well-written, but lacking power that would've made it great
After the first viewing, I was very impressed; it had an interesting plot, an interesting approach, and dialogue that wasn't all bad. By the second, however, i noticed that there were things that the movie lacked...
The actors: Mr.Crowe is a terrific actor, but his acting didn't prove as continually convincing as in L.A.Confidential. Mr.Thompson lacked variety in his acting; any of the scenes in which he was angry, for instance, could have almost been replaced with another scene when he was angry. Although he was convincing, his character came to be of lesser interest.
The production: The choice and placement of music, for instance, or the blunt camera angles did not do the movie justice.
But in looking past the acting, the music, and the gay scenes (not that I'm prejudice against gay people, but since I don't see much of that, it freaked me out a bit) it was a great movie that maintained my interest.
Proof (1991)
intriguing plot, but it's not for everyone
The viewer of this film needs to be a fan of reading in order to appreciate this film; the plot is really intriguing, but it doesn't have the emphasis or drama that would bring it into the interest of the general movie-going public.
At first I laughed at the idea of a plot about a blind photographer, but the writer really pulled it off well. But if the actors were to have over-dramatized it, the movie would've been horrible... but the actors were great and added a light touch that made it very believable. As for me, I can even identify with some aspects of the characters.
Overall, this is a great film, but not everyone would really appreciate it.
