Saved by the Bell (1989)
One Of The Greatest Shows Ever
Yeah we all know that Saved By The Bell is in no way realistic, but who cares? Entertainment is entertainment. My grade 8 teacher used to tell my class every day "High school won't be anything like Saved By The Bell" and we didn't expect it to be. But that doesn't mean the show wasn't great. What tv show is realistic? Except documentaries, none! Saved By The Bell had some kooky storylines, and many times it had bad acting, (not by the stars of the show) but it was a definition of the late 80's and early 90's. And isn't that all we require?
Degrassi Junior High (1987)
Undoubtably the best Canadian show of all time.
Oh how I miss Degrassi. Why oh Why is it not on anymore?
Yes, I know that it's not realistic towards the high school environment, but come on now... Entertainment is entertainment!! Also, no offence to anyone, but most of the acting was mediocre at best, but strangely it didn't take away from one's enjoyment of the show.
Degrassi was definitely the greatest Canadian teen show ever. Yes, it beats "Madison", "Ready or Not", and the one on YTV where there's a band... I can't remember the name... Oh yeah, Degrassi is also better than "Student Bodies" in my opinion. However, it could definitely be said that perhaps Degrassi opened the door of opportunity for these other low budget teen shows.
Maybe I'm just trying to relive the good old days of my childhood, (when I was between the ages of 4-9 it would seem) but if you can catch an old Degrassi rerun, watch it.
Mallrats (1995)
So funny it's painful... even after watching it 50 times.
"Mallrats" rules. It will continue to make you laugh even if you watch it over 50 times.
WARNING: If you get offended easily, like if someone says "ass" or "sex" on television, then this movie probably isn't for you and you should go watch "the Sound Of Music" or something of that genre.
The writing of this movie is amazing. Kevin Smith is probably the most brilliant filmmaker alive. I think he should run for office somewhere, because if I was of legal voting age, I'd vote for him! Everything about this movie is not only funny, but very witty as well. The acting is also very good, especially that of Jason Lee's character "Brodie". That was a terrific performance.
I give it a definite 10. And I think it was worth the 23-day late fees I had to pay because I didn't want to return it. I ended up buying the movie later. And what a great purchase it has been!
The Faculty (1998)
I've seen worse, but I've also seen better.
I've never seen the movie upon which 'The Faculty' was apparently a remake of, but I didn't think this movie sucked, like many others do. I can't say I'd watch it again in the near future, but it didn't suck.
I found it rather suspenseful, a bit too gory, but all in all it did keep me occupied for approximately an hour and a half. I wouldn't go so far as to say this movie was spooky, because there's really no "what if...?" feeling after you finish watching it, like you get from really spooky movies.
The soundtrack is pretty good, and I have no complaints about the acting. In closing, if you're bored, watch it.
Mickey Blue Eyes (1999)
A bit cheesy, but really, really, really funny.
The whole idea of the movie is pretty creative, but near the end of the movie, the story got a little predictable (that's all I'll say about the plot... so no I'm not spoiling anything.)
However, I laughed to the point I was literally in pain. A lot of pain. Especially during "the restaurant scene". Even after the movie I was still giddy, and I started laughing hysterically in the parking lot of the movie theater. An aftershock I guess?
If you're looking for a good laugh you should go see it. If you're looking for a strong plot, save your time and money.
There's Something About Mary (1998)
Rave reviews left me expecting a lot more.
Why oh why did everyone say that this movie was so great? That heightened my expectations way too much that I hardly enjoyed the movie at all. Granted, it was funny, but not as funny as everyone made it out to be.
The story was kind of ridiculous, but I suppose the humour made up for it. Unfortunately I have no aspirations to see it again... or the sequel.
Hackers (1995)
Some love this movie, others don't (because they may be kidding themselves)
This is one of the most amazing movies I have ever seen, and I watch lots of movies, as working in a video store allows me to do. People who are "real hackers" probably won't like the film version of their hobby because apparently 'it isn't realistic' but then what movie is absolutely realistic? Exactly.
The best thing about this movie is Jonny Lee Miller. He's pretty hot. And he does a nice job of hiding his cute British accent. It is undetectable except for one sentence he speaks at the end of the film. And always remember, he's pretty hot. In addition, Matthew Lillard does a magnificent job as usual as a pretty strange guy. The character "the Plague" a.k.a. Eugene Belford is hilarious. I'm not sure if it's meant to be or not, but I still laugh.
Also, do yourself a favour and buy the movie's soundtrack. It is magnificent. I'd probably listen to it more often if my brother hadn't stolen it from me.
In conclusion, go rent Hackers. If you hate it, at least you gave it a chance. If you love it, go rent it again.
