David Wants to Fly (2010)
The Magus (1968)
Bad score, nice view
As other commentators I didn't quite know whether to expect the worst movie ever or an undiscovered pearl. Well, it is neither. For lovers of the novel, I feel the film is quite adequate and interesting. Hard to imagine how the film impressions someone who hasn't read the book. In my mind this could have been an excellent film, but for two aspects: the score is awful (especially in the mountain climbing sequence with Anne); the final "trial" is totally botched, filmed as a dream-sequence instead of reality, as it should be, and featuring a ridiculous robot. I wish I could do a re-make.
Gangster No. 1 (2000)
Wow!
IT's stylish, it's clever, it moves. I am always amazed at how great English actors are in comparison to American or German ones. Of course this film is violent, but the violence is neither superfluous nor superficial. It has something to say. About the language - well, you can't really expect Gangsters to speak like schoolmarms, can ya? This is a real movie.
Todo sobre mi madre (1999)
Colourful Tears well spent
If there's too much crying going on in movies you start to get suspicious. But in this film all the other things taking place divert you excellently from the melodrama and leave you with a feeling of having truly learned something. About life? About women? Very worthwhile!!
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
What happened?
There's been a lot of media hype (too much?) about Kubrick's last film.
If you've seen it, you wonder, what all the fuss has been about. It's mostly boring, tedious dialogue and the motivation for the main character almost unbelievable. Perhaps in the United States stereotypical shots of copulating couples seem like a revolution, but they are not only superfluous, but also unspectacular for a European audience. That's not to say that Europeans are too callous viewing sex scenes, but they won't take them as face value for motivating such haphazard running and erring about.
Talk about the over acting.
All in all a very disappointing performance.
