Almost Famous (2000)
The Rock-N-Roller Coaster of Growing Up.
Almost Famous is far and away one of the greatest movies of this year. Not only was it musically entertaining, it was full of heart. The viewer definately feels for the main character, and every supporting character for that matter. And Philip Seymour Hoffman is amazing as usual. Every emotion is explored here, and explored well, one can certainly identify with the characters. A coming-of-age tale that doesn't come off as soft. A great film.
The Next Best Thing (2000)
The Next Best Thing... to a REAL movie.
The Next Best Thing is just that, the next best thing to a real movie. I went into this movie with extremely high hopes. I thought it was going to be a light-hearted comedy starring some of my favorite actors, Rupert Everett and Benjamin Bratt. But instead it was a film that lacked direction, a good script, and a decent lead actress. Madonna's performance was terrible. However, I think she could have been more likeable had she been given a decent script. The dialogue was unnatural and uncomfortable, not to mention unconvincing. And what was with Madonna's accent?
Southie (1998)
Old fan...New avenues
I found this film to be well written and directed. The characters were likeable, for the most part, and the situation was realistic. What I liked most about this movie was Donnie Wahlberg's performance. Raw, gritty, and full of loyalty and heart. I gave this movie a 9 out 10. It would have gotten a 10 had Donnie spoke up a little. You could barely hear some lines! New Kids fans will enjoy seeing this kid all grown up (and the soundtrack isn't half bad either)!
