Great movie, with lots of inacccuracies
8 January 2006
I have given this movie a six because of the power of the story. I would have given it a higher mark but for the historical inaccuracies of the story. Its strong point was the fact that it showed black people in the west where they surely were, but in this movie present the first of the inacfcuracies. It would not have been abnormal at all for black people to have been in Oklahoma territory in the latter part of the 19th century. They had been there since the trail of tears. Some of the transplanted Natives were slave holders and simply brought their slaves with them. Second, a black Marshall in that territory would not have been strange at all. Gypsy Smith could have easily been modeled after Bass Reeves who was one of several Black US Marshalls who patrolled Okla territory. While there has always been problems between black and white Americans, it did not really occur in Oklahoma until it became a state. Thirdly, I can't believe that the light bulb which was only invented in 1879 would have been used in a barn in Oklahoma. Great idea for a movie, but could have been more accurate.

A sad, even poignant look at the world of prostitution.

This is not a great movie, but it is not a bad movie either. It looks more like a movie made in 1944 than one made in 1964. The fact that it is in black and white probably adds to that feeling.

Shelly Winters does a good job with the script she has to work with. It has some cute scenes and some omissible ones Good costumes, and workable scenery. If you are looking for an accurate portrayal of Polly Adler or even a good story based on the book, this movie comes up lacking. But like a lot of not great movies, it is very watchable.

Lots of great actors appear in cameo roles in this movie, making it a good movie to say, "I never knew he/she made a movie like this."

I saw this movie in the theater and it has taken me 40 years to see it again. While I liked it better the first time, it provides a good trip down memory lane and one I am very glad to have in my collection.

Wine improves with age, and some movies; not this one

I waited six years before seeing this movie. I should have waited longer. There are bad movies and there are bad movies. God knows I have seen my share. This movie was beyond bad. It is so bad that even if it had been classified as a comedy (It was funny, strange), it would have failed. I am so thankful that movies like "Glory" came along to rescue Matthew Broderick. On the other hand, one would have to be a real actor to do the lines he did in this movie and keep a straight face.

Oh, how this movie made me long for the Japanese dubbed versions.

Fantasy movies have lot of room to play with. How do you make a bad fantasy. Use Godzilla as your model.

Four Friends (1981)
Not a movie to leave for even a moment without pausing it first.

This is a great movie. It is one of my favorites. It covers a great time in history to have grown up. It addresses several of the problems of that era, including the Vietnam war, racism, the moon landing, patriotism among others. It also includes smatterings of comedy, drama, horror, incest, and romance. That is a lot to cover in one film. It does not have the time to adequately develop the story or the characters. Therefore, you have to watch it attentively. If you leave it without pausing it , you can miss something that is never explained again. There is so much for the brain to absorb, it seems to drag. I compare it to Deer Hunter which does the same thing. The acting is great, but other than Craig Wasson, the actors disappeared after this movie, and he only seems to have gotten small roles.
