brisk and diverting
22 October 2021
The less you know about the story, the more you are likely to enjoy it. At little more than an hour long, this is a brisk little thriller powered by a decent story. The acting is variable, with the lead doing most of the heavy lifting, but with some decent sets, location shooting (in Ireland) and a plot that rattles along like a clockwork toy this passes the time agreeably enough.

some very funny scenes
15 July 2018
I caught the second half of this on tv once and thought is was absolutely hilarious, the scene where a bad actor refused to die on stage had me laughing very loudly, and other scenes were amusing too.

Perhaps not for everyone, but I thought it was great and would love to see it again.

Great for Hipsters, font fans, just give it a try
16 February 2013
This documentary has a lot going on, there are various themes, a love of the 'steampunk' technology of old style printing, a hipster love of letterpress and design, and the stories of a city far too far from anywhere that was once successful, and is now too far from the digital hipsters that would flock to it.

Hipsters will salivate over the plentiful footage of wooden carved letters, from the days when using a font was a huge investment, and resizing up a point size required a tray full of 'sorts'. Others will enjoy the real people enjoying their enthusiasms.

It is an easy watch, busy and engaging, I am happy to recommend it, even if you do not enjoy it, it is the sort of documentary that really ought to be supported.

One of the best, and full of charm.

defies description
14 November 2001
This defies description. It is like Branded to Kill, in that it is so unlike anything else you have ever seen, it compels you just to watch it. Nicol Williamson gives a dazzling performance as a cannibalistic nobleman, the inquisition make a surprise appearance, sex and black magic how can it go wrong. It is hard to take this film seriously, ie when the monk makes a confession. What does it all mean, who know? It seems anti clerics, in that the clerics seem to be even more repugnant than the devil worshipping villains, who at least seem to be enjoying themselves. Watch and enjoy.

another Rutger Hauer action flick
21 July 2000
In the context of low-ish budget action flicks with Rutger Hauer in them, this really is quite a gem. What sets it apart is the location shooting in really run down Russian looking locations. The slightly futuristic slightly gone to seed look is great, and equals Blade Runner (though I might be the only one to think this). Remember the start of the James Bond film in the scrap yard with all the Russian statues, well this is like that only better.

The film might never attain greatness, but it has a great Point Blank type standoff which even makes sense, a great Blade Runner type ending which makes sense. Did the other reviewers see the same film, there was not that much sex and violence when I saw it.
