fantastic horror yet not gory
5 November 2006
I thought this would be another run of the mill zombie movies, I've seen enough to know that they can get very boring. HOWEVER--This movie was filmed well and kept me clutching my knees until the end. This movie contains no zombies and I'm very glad for that. Expect to think about the origin of the virus, not just accept that blood will be spilled. Also, the version of infection is very well thought out and realistic. It highlights a few pieces of our society which are taken for granted, and asks the audience to really think about the situation. The gore is downplayed in favor of humanity. This movie really sits in your psyche and grabs hold.

horror blending into suspense blending into funny
4 September 2006
I watched this movie without any expectations. That made this one a great find because it's cheesy and self-acknowledging without being over the top. Sure, it won't win an Oscar, but it was a fun ride!! The idea behind this movie, that it's been done before, and over again is what makes the movie funny, suspenseful, horrific and sometimes just downright silly. This is more a homage to horror films than a movie itself. If ever a drinking game screamed to be created, this is the movie. The clichés are there, the blood is there, the references to Night of the Living Dead are there. But these ingredients are not overwhelming. Keep the pen and paper handy, as you'll need them to keep track of numerous nods to horror films. Perhaps, many a long night was spent in production, doing so. And it was done well.

entertaining

This movie was okay, considering Lovecraft's ideas are hard to portray on the screen. Each story stayed true to Lovecraft's horror, though the last was leaning towards the modern version of horror (gory, bloody, etc) The acting was much better than I expected, especially the last story. The sequences with Lovecraft are taking many licenses with his real self, but then again, his real personality doesn't need to be shown to enjoy his stories. I enjoyed the low budget, yet quality, effects as well.

(for the MSTies, watch for the Necronomicon door sequence near the end, amusingly similar)

MY FAVORITE MOVIE

This movie is fantastic. The cinematography is captivating, the characters are painfully human, you laugh, you cry...just watch it--that's all I need to say, it's that good. Chungking Express is just the beginning of the story...
