Fingernails (2023)
A Total Waste of Time
Boring, underwhelming, low in production value and uninspiring, it amazes me that Cate Blanchett signed on to produce this dud.
While Jessie Buckley and Jeremy Allen White have great screen presence, we're expected to believe that she would walk away from her solid relationship with White to fall for the dull as dishwater Riz Ahmed, who is totally one note in this film.
Buckley and Ahmed have zero chemistry and the entire premise of this film is basically ridiculous. I know how hard it is to make a movie and I wish I could say something positive about this one - but it's hard. Okay, Luke Wilson shows up for a few scenes and he doesn't suck. Christian Meer and Amanda Arcuri shine in small supporting roles, and the film has a great soundtrack.
I can't believe they are submitting this for award consideration. Maybe an award for the worst film of the year?
Listen to the music but skip this waste of time.
Sorstalanság (2005)
A Very Moving Motion Picture
Saw this film at the AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles. It is an amazingly well made, well acted motion picture about a very difficult subject. The direction and cinematography were excellent. The lead boy was only 12 when the film was shot, yet he delivers a mature, sensitive and deeply emotional performance.
The film is long but very compelling and speaks loudly about man's inhumanity to his fellow man. The message is even more disturbing when told through the eyes of a young teenager who is caught up in the atrocities of the Nazis and their Hungarian allies.
If this film were in English or directed by Steven Spielberg, it would no doubt win numerous awards. Let us hope that "Fateless" is recognized for it's bravery and excellence.
Bend It Like Beckham (2002)
A sweet, feel-good movie!
"Bend It Like Beckham" left me with a smile on my face. Yes, it's predictable, but it's a really fun little ride with some sweet characters that you end up caring about as the story unfolds. "Bend It" is a pleasant way to spend 90 minutes. It's a perfect feel-good movie for these troubled times.
