Star Trek: New Worlds (1999)
A poor attempt at a strategy game
With the recent rush of strategy games based on Star Trek it was inevitable that Interplay would make an attempt. Unfortunately it was at best misguided and at worst a complete disaster. The control system is preposterous, movement can only be done with the keyboard and arrow buttons, not the mouse, the controls often don't do what you want to and there are horrible graphical glitches even on my very reliable ATI R128 card. This might have been a decent game, but the above glitches and other games like Armada and Star Fleet Command 2 and even the now budget range Birth Of The Federation just pale it into insignifiacance. If you're a Star Trek fan and you see this game at a low price, by all means buy it. But for normal Real Time Strategy fans and people who have played on Armada and SFC this is a huge let down.
Star Trek: Armada (2000)
Good, but buggy
This is a great game. The one player missions are fun and challenging, and like a lot of games, if you get bored you can download new ships off the internet. These "mods" can add a whole new depth of gameplay. I recommend the Millennium Project mod, while the E&F mod is also worth considering (although it does away with the Borg). One point though. Until I played on Star Trek: New Worlds a few months ago, this seemed like the buggiest Star Trek game in history. Upgrading to Windows ME and DirectX 8.0 seemed to sort this out, but you should make sure you have a decent system. ATI and Voodoo cards seem to work best with it.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (1995)
A worthy sequel
As good as the first one, and certainly superior to the follow up. The game has more depth to it, with the addition of "Hero" coins and the "Lost World". The one criticism I could make is the music. Despite the game being made in 1995, the music sounds more like it's from 1985!
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)
A good follow on to ST2
The audience was expecting a good follow on to ST2, and ST3 is a success here. The SFX are disappointing (apart from the scene at the end where the Enterprise disintegrates) although the plot is certainly coherent and keeps you going.
