Second Chance Christmas (2017 TV Movie)
2/10
Not a Christmas Movie. And not a "good" movie.
27 October 2019
There are multiple "Second Chance Christmas" titles. This one focuses around Caroline, an (initially) disgruntled over-achiever, Jack, her somewhat-slacker husband, and amnesia.

To avoid any spoilers, that's all you get of the plot. But all you need to know is... there are these two protagonists and five secondary characters... an assistant, two best friends (his) and two parents (hers.) Of these, all but two of the secondary characters pretty much lie the whole time. Caroline is the main character, supposed to be the one you're sympathetic towards, and she starts the movie off with forgery, a felony. (Even though he signed, it's still forgery if she mislead as to what he was signing.)

Christmas isn't actually relevant to the movie. It's barely a minor player. If there were "Groundhog Day Parties", this could easily have been "Second Chance Groundhog".

Despite all this, the movie is more about abandonment (or feelings there-of) than deception. This really screams "Ho ho ho!", doesn't it?

Even at the very end of the movie, mercifully less than 100 minutes in, we learn they're still keeping secrets from each-other. And, in a continued break from reality, they celebrate the suddenly-unveiled news rather than distrusting the deception... even though she mentions it.

There are worse movies. But this is pretty bad.

Christmas Perfection (2018 TV Movie)
2/10
Not as cute as it tries to be
14 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is a 2018 TV Movie that smacks of being a 1983 TV Movie. The protagonist, Darcy, is a control freak even by control freak standards, and is worse on Christmas due to some family issues. All she wants is a "Perfect" Christmas.

Oh, and it had better start with waffles! And the just-out-of-reach perfect man from the office. Not her best friend from childhood, who is a bit frumpy. (Why can't the old friend ever be the sexy one?)

And then a mystical shop lady gives her a token that lands her inside her magical perfect Christmas village diorama. Where every day is the "Perfect Christmas". Sounds a bit like Groundhog Day. Except without the interesting personalities, or any character growth. No villains but no heroes either.

Problems with this movie include: 1. Only one character even remotely sympathetic (Brandon The Frump) 2. No characters that grow or change really. Darcy just gets bored or frustrated, but not mature. 3. More of a series of tropes and cliches strung together than a plot. 4. Perhaps five splashes of clever or fun dialog. Mostly between her divorced parents. 5. Bizarrely bad "Irish" accents. They'd be comically bad, if only they weren't so painful. 6. Painfully bad acting by two of the three leads. Which may be a side-effect of having to use an accent they aren't prepared for.

I like Christmas rom-coms, even mediocre ones. This one falls shy of even that low bar.

The Girl in the Café (2005 TV Movie)
3/10
Needs more story, less Politics
3 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
To be fair, I haven't made it all the way through watching this film. But I generally enjoy character stories and don't usually give up mid-movie.

The movie is basically about a older dead-end bureaucrat, downtrodden, uninteresting, and reserved even for a Brit, who links up with a far younger unfocused female stranger with (he finds out later) strong political passions that run counter to the establishment he is a part of. This -could- have made a good comedy (fish out of water, odd couple, etc.), perhaps a good romance (if the characters were closer in age or at least had SOMETHING in common, or even just chemistry) or a good character study, but in this case (at least through an hour), there is precious little to enjoy about the characters and not much comedy.

The film comes off instead as a propaganda piece, along the lines of "If the world is suffering, people have AIDs and anyone is starving, it's your fault." This certainly isn't escapism. Nor, unfortunately, is it entertainment. Merely celluloid carrying a message.

Dragon Fighter (2003 Video)
Dumb fun but has some flaws.
25 July 2004
Okay, when you're watching a movie with dragons, you might not require complete believability. Some suspension of disbelief is alright. And even though most of the dragon scenes look like they came out of screen shots of Doom, I'm good with that; the dragon was reasonably believable. And I could accept the growth and apparent infinite capacity for flying and fire-breathing without food or fuel. And even the stunts and the basic premise, which was after all essentially Jurassic Park.

But the character development of the humans... that just wasn't remotely realistic. You don't watch your friends die in front of your eyes and be making jokes two minutes later upon escaping, followed by more risks, more deaths and additional unlikely escapes and then ask for a date.

If only they'd made the humans as believable as the dragon!

Oblivion (1994)
A Great Guilty Pleasure!
11 December 1999
Oblivion is a low-budget cheesy space-western with so many in-jokes and running gags and stereotypes that it has twice been the cornerstone of video parties at my place!

The story is coherent-but-flimsy. The real fun is in the bizarre special-effects, the character references, the costumes, etc.

To enjoy this movie, make sure you know what the major players have done before. Keep it in mind. Listen to every word. Have half-a-dozen other people there. With lots of snacks or beer.

Oh, and the plot? Who cares. Much like a Batman or Addam's Family movie (for several reasons, both), this movie is about look, feel, and fun. Plot is almost incidental.
