Chung fung dui: No foh gai tau (1996)
Hong Kong Emergency Police Unit vs International Criminals
When you hear of dealing with international criminals, you may think of great detectives or whatever high competent police units. This film, therefore, can give you surprise that the emergency police unit, which is actually in relatively low level, was the main team to cope with the great organized criminals by some reasons.
I found it is not only a great and brilliant action movie, but also a good drama. The team, consisted of several policemen and one policewoman who have different characteristics, showed many precious human relationships. There are brotherhood, conflict, collaborating as well as compromising. I love this film because I was touched by their team working spirit. I felt as if I were one of them.
Moreover, I appreciate Benny Chan who was a director of this film so much. He has his own style to create action scenes, they are poetic instead of too violent. I especially love the shooting scene in Central(where is the most crowded place in Hong Kong), just see it and you'll know how intense the shooting was. If you've already watched all John Woo's films and hence you're hunger for seeing somthing great and stylish action scenes, Benny Chan can satisfy your needs.
Besides the actors in the emergency unit, I was excited by the performance of Francis Ng. He did a short part of the film since he was killed in a busy road in Central at the quite beginning. I was impressed the way he presented his character.
In short, good plot, good director and brilliant actors as well as great action scenes (though it still have rooms for improvement if there is higher budget ) you'll find in this film. I rate it 10 out of 10! Make Benny Chan's film as your first choice!
Hei kek ji wong (1999)
weak script but great performance
Maybe I had too high expectation before entering to the cinema to watch this film, I was disappointed after seeing this. The script is poorly written although the idea of the story is excellent. The ending of this film is not logical enough. It's a kind of pity to have such a good story and quite good beginning but the ending ruined the whole thing.
However, I still recommend it since Chow sing chi's performance was really great! He can draw the viewers' attention to him even though there were not many jokes or funny lines, it's a good proof of his amazing acting skill.
Finally, what I want to comment is the new actors, it's obvious that they tried their best to act, but in my own opinion, their performances are too exaggerate, it would be much better if they can act in a natural way.
Speed (1994)
Great action moive
It's a great action movie I've ever seen. Although I'd watched it quite long time from now, the screenplay, action and the tricks are still freshly in my memory. I like it not just because the arresting actors did a extremely good job, but also the tense story. Many may complaint that the stories of action films are usually too simple or even idiotic. Actually, this one is no exception. However, I, in my opinion, like its beauty of simplicity very much. It just gives the viewers more room for experiencing the exciting mood without being busy in understanding all the complicated things or details which may , in certain extent, help the story to be appeared more logical and smooth.
I hadn't expected that this film was so tense that there was no one climax, which is usually supposed to be shown at the end of the film, but it put you in all time excitement right from the start. The trapping in the elevator, the sequences of challenges faced in the bus (such as the murderer in the bus, the wound of the bus driver, the appearance of the baby cart in the road, the cliff that they've to across, the danger in running out petrol in bus..etc), and finally the fighting in the train are all qualified as a high tidal wave in the film in my point of view.
Besides all these, the music is really surprisingly outstanding. It's simple but it fit the picture and mood so much. It helped me to concentrate on seeing this film and also it's now helping me to remember every detail of the moive.
