Serena (2014)
Poorly adapted screenplay or poorly directed
Either that or poorly adapted. In their effort to create a strong woman, the director or editor or screenwriter (not sure who bears the most responsibility) destroyed the theme of the film. These were very strong performances from the actors but by cutting out so much of the themes of the book (which BTW I didn't have to read to see this) the film was not sure what it wanted to be. There was no indication that Serena had jealousy towards George's previous dalliance. Until all of a sudden, there was. No foreshadowing, no hint of craziness, nada. What a waste of stellar performances.
Too Much Sun (1990)
I rarely have walked out of a movie
But I did this one. The premise was tired and executed poorly. What drek.
Rocketman (2019)
This film is definitely Oscar worthy
But considering when it was released, I worry that it will be overlooked. Like many other reviewers I wasn't aware that it was a musical, but it was apparent very quickly. It felt as though Taron Egerton put his heart and soul into this role and it definitely should be rewarded. Jamie Bell was also so real in his performance. Honestly, I think those who may not have had positive reviews may have had discomfort in the sex scenes. Again, there was no holding back from Taron. I thought he was pretty awesome in the first Kingsman film and he has shown such a maturity and depth of understanding of this role (and he's only 29!) that it really blew me away. I'm going to see it again - and I don't do that very often!
Solaris (2002)
A lofty goal, not quite achieved
I usually love the Soderberg/Clooney one-two punch, but I have to admit Solaris was a bit of a disappointment. I think they were reaching for 2001, which, admittedly, is a stretch for any filmmaker. It was however, one of the finest performances I've seen George Clooney in to date. He was somber and tender and the grieving for his lost wife was very moving. Ms. McElhone's performance was wonderful as well as Viola Davis'. The edginess of Jeremy Davies' character did not quite work, though. All in all, I didn't mind the unanswered questions, but although the direction and editing had the Soderberg stamp, it was just not up to normally high standards I'd come to expect from Steven Soderberg.
Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
A nail-biting, roller coaster ride
I don't think this movie was for everyone, but Adam Sandler was certainly ripe for this type of role. Emily Watson, is as usual, brilliant, as his love interest. Those mischievous eyes never quite let you know what's going on in her head. The plot starts out fairly simply - a young man beleaguered by seven domineering sisters has an incredible rage simmering below the surface and is also very lonely. Along comes Emily Watson, who seems so empathetic almost immediately and a relationship begins. There are a few scary/hilarious plot twists that add to the tension and completely work. My only complaint is the soundtrack, which I think was a little grating and designed to create additional tension, but just served to annoy! Other than that - a definite must - especially for those who can't imagine Adam Sandler in this type of role! I've avoided most of his films myself - too sophomoric but in this one he really shines.
Nueve reinas (2000)
Really cool
So many of the characters were suspect in this it was hard initially to tell what was what. Although I did manage to figure out who was screwing who well before the end, it was very well done and a thoroughly enjoyable film. I'd see this one again in a heartbeat! =^.^=
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
Amazing performance for Matt Damon
I was more impressed by Matt Damon's performance than almost any other movie I've seen this year. His portrayal of sociopath Tom Ripley was incredible. His facial expressions were amazing. I've never been a fan of his, but will reconsider after this performance. The ensemble cast was also superlative, especially Jude Law. How they got two Brits to portray spoiled American brats so well is beyond me! Although the subject matter is bound to make some uncomfortable, I recommend this film highly.
