I walked out...
1 January 2009
I can't remember the last time a movie was so boring that I walked out. The Weatherman and The Island were both so bad that I thought about it but I even stayed to the end in those. This movie was incomprehensible, not funny and just went on and on and on. Like some other commentators, I wondered if parts were just French humor that I didn't get or if the characters were serious. I finally just gave up and tried napping because I didn't want to disturb my husband if he was enjoying it but he noticed and let me know that it was OKAY if I wanted to leave and out the door we went. He would like to know how it ended...if Denevue lived or died etc...(I don't even care).

This was the worst movie I think I ever...

Warning: Spoilers
*** Oh so many spoilers *** Yeah. Hated it.

Okay. Maybe I have seen worse but after walking out of this, I couldn't think of one. I like the comment earlier that this movie was a non-linear mess. What exactly was this movie about? The best I can come up with is:

1.) Don't try to cross the US/Mexican border with your drunk a** nephew driving the car. 2.) Don't give young Moroccan kids a gun to play with cuz it could go really really bad. 3.) Don't commit suicide. It could really jack your deaf/mute daughters head up and she doesn't need anymore problems.

All of these happenings were very loosely related. Unlike, Traffic or Crash that also had multiple connected story lines, this one failed to be compelling, come together at any point or convey a strong message about anything. It was just pointless with so many very pointless scenes one after another and another.

Exactly at what point did we need to see a 12 year old boy masturbating behind a rock? I ask you, exactly what did that bring to the story or the character? It contributed nothing. It was just weird.

Exactly why was the Asian girl so desperate for love that she attempted to molest the dentist? What does that have to do with anything exactly? Am I really to believe that she was so distraught over her mothers suicide the prior year and her own deaf/muteness that it turned her to sexual desperation? She tried really really hard, folks.

Look, I'm no prude or anything, I like gratuitous sex the same as the next person but I'd like there to be some kind of reason that fits to the story...just because I'm odd that way. In this case there was no real story so I guess one could just throw in unreasonably weird scenes wherever they so choose, who cares, why not, when it's this bad it can get a whole lot worse...

What any of it had to do with the failure to communicate, I have no idea. It's completely wasted on me.

Don't even bother renting this one. Really, it's that bad.

Excellent
3 October 2003
I saw this movie last week and haven't quit thinking about it since. I think that this is probably not going to be a movie for most people under 30 right off the top and it's just not going to be interesting to people who like a quick thrill or an easy story. It is a an extremely thoughtful, mature, smart and beautiful movie for the rest that have the time.

It's about two people in a foreign country. They don't understand the people around them and vice versa. They no longer understand their mates and vice versa and maybe they've even lost understanding of their own lives. For just a little while they connect with each other and rejuvenate themselves. Call it love, connection, soul mates, understanding, whatever...it's real and it's good and it's only for one week.

It's really quite stunning, at times it's hilarious and eventually there's a little bit of bittersweet heartbreak. Bill Murray was not the Bill Murray I know from years past. He was even better in this mature roll. I'm still amazed. Wow. Loved it. Fantastic...

Cool in the way of Memento
24 July 2003
I thought this was a great 'whodunit' movie. I didn't know all through what was going to happen, why or who. The movie was almost as good as Memento (which I loved) because it has so many twists and turns. I saw this about a week ago and I'm still chuckling to myself a bit about how interesting this story was. I paid over $10 to see it at a hotel I was staying at and it was well worth it in my opinion.

Fun
26 December 2002
I've found that I like to wait for a few days to let a movie settle in my mind before I vote because my first reaction usually changes but, in this case I just must put something down. This movie is FUN! This movie was worth 8 bucks. This was a great story that kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to see it again. I was unsure of Leo before going in but the man pulled it off. Tom Hanks was a wonderful character and the movie got a health round of applause at the end which I rarely see. Go see it and have a great time.

Oh yeah...good stuff.
8 August 2002
Don't listen to the critics that bash this movie. It's good. It's real good. I rate movies based on whether I felt I wasted my time and this was a fine hour and 1/2. Definitely, worth the ride. It isn't gonna change your life but it isn't meant to. It's just a good suspenseful fun time. Being that I've seen so many 'realistic' sad endings lately, I was thrilled to walk away with something lighter with more imagination.

I thought it would be better.
13 July 2002
After reading all the hype on this movie I thought it was easily going to blow me away, be best movie of the year. I love Paul Newman and I love Tom Hanks and most of their movies but, this one was really not very good. The acting was good, the story could have been good but it just didn't have any feeling to it. It was more like watching a report about something that happened but you never get emotionally involved with these characters. I never developed any connection to them that I cared about what happened very much. The movie started really slowly and was kind of boring for about the first 1/2 hour. During this time it looked like Mendes was trying to develop these characters and their relationship but he never pulls this off successfully. Although, you are supposed to get that their relationship is so close its father/son, hence the painful events later, Mendes wasn't able to draw this successfully. A quick piano duet and a game of dice with Sullivans kids, and a comment of loyalty is supposed to show me how tight their bond is? This is the underlying relationship that is the basis for the entire movie and thats it??? It just didn't work and it's unfortunate that such great actors went to waste from Mendes' short-sightedness.

The Tin Drum (1979)
I have remembered the scenes for 20 years.
23 December 2001
I saw this movie back in 80'or 81' on HBO in the middle of the night. I was only 7 years old and everyone in the house had fallen asleep and I sat there enthralled. I did not know what it was about throughout the entire move. I didn't understand what the story was but the scenes in the movie have stayed with me for 20 years! Due to the internet,20 years later I am able to come on and find out what in the world I saw that night because I remembered that the title had Drum in it. I still don't know if the story of this movie will be any good but I can make the comment that this movie absolutely has the most memorable scenes I've ever encountered in a film before.

Drew Barrymore is Fabulous
20 October 2001
Drew Barrymore astounded me in this movie. I walked out floored by what she showed me as an actress that is so versatile. I had read this book and wondered how in the world the Charlie's Angel would pull off a movie like this. I will never doubt her talent to do whatever she wants to again. She really nailed this character. The movie although changed and edited from the book dramatically was a great movie and really told the story well. I feel like it got the essence of what Beverly D'Onofrio was trying to portray about her life as a teenage mother.

Good Show! I read the comments before going and I have to disagree with people that thought the ending awful. After reading them I couldn't wait to see what they were talking about...The ending was soooo Rod Serling; great. The movie was worth seeing if only to be amazed at the amazing makeup jobs but luckily it was a fun, entertaining movie all around.
