A classic old western!
6 February 2022
This movie has It all! A stellar cast, old western showdowns, a lot of horse riding, and humor! The cussing, unfortunately, is Godless west coast atheist who has to include as much blasphemy as they can stuff in a script, but the movie tries to gloss over all the GD's in the film!

In the end, it's just fun watching old time westerns, especially ones that are stuffed so full of modern day actors!

This movie is very special if you're a music nerd!
15 May 2020
The bluegrass and old town music surrounding this movie is steep in old time Mountain music and musicians! The songs within this movie was created by musicians that have studied centuries of American, backwoods, mountain music. Music created by men & women who toiled all day in the fields, working with their hands creating this country with hard work, family values, and Christian backgrounds. Good family, soulful, mountain music! In addition to this movie winning all kinds of awards the music, and musicians also earned critical acclaim and numerous awards! Well worth watching, over and over!!! Then purchase the soundtrack and engross yourself in it as well!

A Love story for the ages
9 June 2019
I see from other reviews this is a love-it-or-hate-it movie! But for me the chemistry in this movie is perfect. The struggles were well defined, and the mean idiots well defined (especially the manager). Who knew Lady Gaga could totally knock this part out of the atmosphere! Her acting was nothing short of perfect! And as far as Bradley Cooper's directorial debut - fantastic! This movie deserves every award it receives and then some.

Warning: Spoilers
Chills of just how close we came to a total nuclear meltdown in the Soviet hemisphere!

Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert!

And while the female nuclear scientist was a fictional character, comprised of a team of nuclear scientist assisting the lead scientist in detaining cause, it's none-the-less chilling at how close we came to having a different world today! Lastly, imagine the facts of this event: 1,000 square miles in the "exclusion zone" - land uninhabitable for at least hundreds of years! The Russian "official" death toll: 31. Facts uncovered show that figure as high as 93,000. And as much as 400,000 people 'temporarily' displaced - to this day!

It was an okay movie
18 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The story line was predictable, including the ending. But I thought it was an okay movie. I'm thinking Michael Douglas financed this flick cause he wanted to play the bad guy, which he did well in it.

Too close to home!
16 June 2018
The writers have done an excellent job in making the writing believable, except where the parent actually learns from his mistakes (LOL). The characters, the stages, the backgrounds, all make this show believable. Hope Netflix can afford to keep the show around!

DO NOT WATCH if you are the least bit Claustrophobic
14 October 2012
It took me over 8 months, and multiple rentals, to allow me to watch this film to its ending. The first 10 minutes will totally annihilate your sense of well being IF you are the least bit claustrophobic and are paying attention to the movie. I swear the first time I sat down to watch this movie I had to stop at about the 8 minute mark, take medication to calm my blood pressure, and it took me almost the entire night before I could calm myself down to the point of being able to sleep. I can watch the heaviest of war movies, gore movies, etc., but this movie about limited spaces to survive definitely got to me more than the goriest of gore movies!

I finally reached the end of this film after sitting down to watch it about 10 times. Each time I would get a little further into the movie, before finally seeing those dang credits roll by! Thank God it's over with!

Excellent movie, well directed, extremely well acted, and my hats off to Ryan Reynolds for his abilities of making this seem so realistic and for going the entire movie!

Since watching this film, I've met with each one of my kids and made it very clear that I NEVER want to see a coffin again!

A true depiction of the humanistic effect of war
1 August 2004
Thought provoking, humbling depiction of the human tragedies of war. A small, but altruistic view of one family's interactions with the enemy during the civil war in Kentucky. This movie lessens the "glamor" of war; showing it's effect on not only the soldier but the entire family unit.

A lot of today's movies show war as an opportunity to highlight the "hero's" and other glamorous features of war, but very little attempts to show the true effect war actually takes on a community. This movie attempts this through a retelling of a person's memory of those days. This movie is stated to be loose translation of an actual events, when in reality, this movie is probably a factual reality of hundreds, perhaps thousands of "actual events" during the civil war. I highly recommend those interested in our civil war to watch this movie.

Someone hire them a dialect coach!
12 June 2002
Born and raised in South Louisiana, and having traveled all over LA, I've never heard accents that even resembled what they were attempting! The movie was good - I was the youngest of about a dozen males in the theater (I'm 42). Go take your wife - she'll appreciate your treating her to it - and we all know that a happy wife makes for a happy husband. This is an entertaining movie, I've seen a lot worse!
