Absolutely Stunning!
19 December 2005
I had been waiting for a year and finally got to see this yesterday. I have been a fan of Johnny Cash since I was a child. We even took our young daughter with us who enjoyed the film as much as we! The performances by Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix were top notch...they both really exuded the characters of Johnny and June. The singing was remarkable. Their chemistry was intense. I hope to see these two work together again in another movie someday. Supporting cast also did a splendid job. Every aspect about this film was really great: screenplay, music, cinematography, direction. I highly recommend this beautiful intelligent biographical film about one of the greatest American musical artists in our history.

Classic early talking picture - Richard Dix transition
18 August 2005
This is a comment following up to a previous post. Richard Dix was a big silent film star before Cimarron. He was one of the few silent actors who successfully made the transition to talking pictures. I hardly recognized Irene Dunne at first, this was only her second film. This film is fun to watch as the talent of the actors is evident. People must keep in mind that the sound quality, sets, etc. were all still relatively new in 1931. Actors and directors were accustomed to silent movies. The costumes, performances, and sets are quite good, in my opinion. Once gets a feel for how the home life, new life in the southwest, and the timeless snobbery of the town "ladies." The courtroom scenes are intense. The writing was realistic for the time period. Scathing accusatory and judgmental remarks to browbeat and break the woman's spirit. A very moving picture.

Dark drama, Ulmer directed - Barbara Payton's last film
29 September 2004
The other reviewer did not have anything good to say about this movie. Well, it is cheaply made and obviously, Edward Ulmer didn't have much of a budget. He mostly directed B-movies anyway. However, this was one of his later films and his star was Barbara Payton. Her sad sad life was on the down-swing at the time she did this, her final film. She was only 28 years old and this marked the end of her career which had started only five years earlier. If you watch this film, you will see a very good performance by Barbara Payton. This may not be a true film-noir, but it is a dark, downbeat drama with a great musical score. I believe this is worth 77 minutes of viewing time. Enjoy!

Entertaining easy little picture
5 March 2003
This picture was funny and fast paced. I was in the mood for a light hearted easy-going comedy and this one hit the spot. Seeing Goldie Hawn in her 50s looking so good and constant in her humor is kind of inspirational and reassuring. Susan Sarandon was good as always. Geoffrey Rush was also quite funny. The chemistry between Goldie/Susan and Goldie and Geoffrey was there!

dark and moody well done, but a bit of a downer
5 March 2003
The acting is very good in this film and cinematography interesting. The story is thought provoking but overall, rather gloomy. I wouldn't call this an enjoyable film, but if you are in the mood for a well acted and interesting mystery, I would recommend it--but expect to be bummed afterward.

well worth a trip
26 June 2000
This is a completely entertaining, interesting, and funny film. The beginning sets your mood for dry humor mixed with the life observations of puppets and humans relationships. The puppet theme is all over the place and works. The trips into J.M.'s mind/body are hilarious and bizarre. If you enjoy dry humor and imaginative storylines with great performances, see this film.

The Doors (1991)
A Jim Morrison fan wants more of the real Jim shown
29 February 2000
The film was both good and bad. The acting by Val Kilmer was excellent, and he did exhibit Jim Morrison's persona quite well.

However, I have been a Doors and Jim Morrison fan for 20 years and was disappointed in the film overall. Stone should have covered some of the early years of Jim's life to allow viewer's more insight to his personality and character. Fortunately, I have read about him and also all of his published poetry. It's true, he was caustic and fascinated with death and the "other side." However, Jim Morrison was highly creative and intelligent, an artist who as so many others, spread some energy and thrills to our world for a short time and then he was gone.
