Universal Soldier: The Return (1999)
One of the worst sequels ever made
Nothing bad about Van Damme, he gets the job done. His one-liners in US:TR are about as funny as the swedish weather-charts in january though. The footage/cinematography, especially in the fightscenes, is _really really bad_. The moves, kicks, and punches are pretty well executed, but the guy who filmed it and his buddy the cutter should really consider sticking to drama. The fight scene with Michael Jay White and Van Damme was so bad I almost cried. It really put the fight scenes in 'Rush Hour' in a new perspective. On another note, the heroine 'Erin' played by Heidi Schanz was so annoying that I got sick of her after just a few 'bimbo-reporter' lines. The script fails completely in stirring up any emotion other than the urge to fast-forward. Which I did. Frequently.
Ravenous (1999)
People really need to see this...
As an example of how you _can_ make a different horror/thriller movie, without getting plain weird. 'Ravenous' builds up a small setting (in the late 1800's), which focuses only on what's important to the story. It blends dark comedy with disturbing imagery of gore and violence. The music is brilliant throughout (by Damon Albarn among others), and the footage of the snowclad mountains of "california" is terrific. The less you know of the story, the better. If you rent this in Sweden, don't even look at the cover, it gives WAY too much away.
Cube (1997)
A great visualization of a nightmare
This could have been the delirious fever-induced nightmare of a kid hooked on sci-fi movies. Seemingly random people being thrown into a maze of sterile rooms with no clue as to how they got there or why. It's an awesome idea, and the movie does fairly well in presenting it. The actors are also quite good, if somewhat theatrical at times. Prerequisites when watching are _quiet snacks_, since complete silence gives it an extra edge.
