The Notebook (2004)

A satisfying chick flick
9 June 2004
If you're in the mood for a movie that will satisfy every romantic yearning you have and leave you in tears, then this is it. Having read the book, I was prepared for a sappy movie. And don't get me wrong, it is very sentimental, and full of rather canned moments. But the acting is so great that you just get sucked in! The chemistry that the two young actors have is some of the best I've seen on screen in a long time. The movie felt like it was about twenty minutes long because you get so absorbed in the characters. I thought that the translation of the book was excellent. Yes, it's sentimental, but if you're in the mood for romance, it won't let you down.

Like spending two hours with evil
15 March 2003
While a well done film, it's not enjoyable. There are enough mean people in the world without voluntarily subjecting yourself to another one that is the heart of this film. Rachel Weisz plays convincingly in this film as a heartless art student who subjects Paul Ruud to her talents as a sculptor of humans. The best thing about this film is Paul Ruud's subtle transformation from geek to chic. By the end of the film, you've realized how convincing his change was. However, just because a movie is well made and well acted does not mean it is worth watching. When I left this movie, I felt as if I had spent two hours in the company of evil and meanness. If you like a think piece that leaves you feeling negative, then this is the perfect movie. But if you're looking to spend your hard earned money on a movie that leaves you feeling better for having spent it, choose another flick.

Terrific all around!
8 December 2001
I wasn't expecting much when I went to see this movie on its opening night, as I'd heard reviews saying it wasn't that great. It was a delightful surprise! The perfect blend of tongue-in-cheek humor, awesome (and easy to look at) actors, and slight plot twists make for a really fun movie. No, it won't win Oscars. Yes, it was predictable at times. But Steven Soderbergh wanted to create a fun movie and create it he did. Is there anything this man can't do? All I can say is, make us another one! We need more clever, hip movies like this.
