Door Mouse (2022)

Loved it!
21 March 2023
Door Mouse has such a distinct and well composed style that I watched it in growing awe. It' s not often that you meet such a clear tone in direction, camera, light, color and dialog in a genre indie film. The director seemed to know exactly what he was aiming for and hit the nail on the head. Somewhere between hardboiled neo noir, a dark generation-z-graphic-novel and a kind of weird Palahniuk-ish underground detective story. Well written, never over done or cliche, for sure in danger of walking into a trap of style over substance but never falling for it mainly thanks to its lead. Hayley Law carys the movie with her big eyes, a heavy existentialist litenes, dark and doomed wit and the intense charme from a princess of the gutter. She does such a wonderful job in portraying this iconic misfit called Mouse, stubborn, cool and very very sexy but never without essence or depth. She had me 3 Minutes in with the line "every morning I wake up in the afternoon". You can't help but love this character. And the rest of the cast is on the point too. So is the energetic garage band soundtrack that glues everything together.

I wouldn't have thought that this is the directorial debut of writer and director Mr. Jogia. Well done! Very well done. I'll keep my eyes open for his and Mrs. Law's work in the future.

Jezabel (2022)

You want to see this briliant little Gem!
11 March 2023
Pretty clever and grimm coming of age crime-drama of four good-for-nothing kids interwoven with the death of one of them. Some kind of arthouse-thriller but not artsy-fartsy. More a latino version of a Park Chan-wook flic. The criminal case is told from the perspective of sixteen years later. You don't know if you should like or hate those slackers but you will feel for them anyway. The four young actors are just brilliant.

A very well told story about guild & punishment, power dynamics and the questionability of memories. You get a nonlinear narrative, suspence, great acting, awesome camera work, a lot of nudity, some political undertones and enough to think about when the movie is over. It's one of these little gems that went under the radar and didn't get the attention it should have. Maybe because of the amount of sex scenes or because of the nonlinear jumpiness that needs you to pay attention. Whatever the reason is, Jezabel is one raw diamond with a wonderful tarnished beauty, a thriller that will compel you to think and stays with you.

Go and watch it!!!

Incantation (2022)

Nah!
1 September 2022
I'm a big fan of the found footage genre if it plays by the rules: Every Shot has to be accounted for and has to somehow make sense why someone is filming it. Incantation is a mess in regards to that. It switches angles without an established camera like sunglasses. And don't get me started on the question of believability. Oh my god! The director has to think nobody watching this crap is able to do that. The movie has some nice scares and gore in it but that's about it. The story is ridiculous (even for a horror flic) and the big twist in the end I did expect ten minutes into the movie.

Avoid.

If superheros never left the 60's

Tiered of the Marvelverse? And DC makes you moan? Check this one out. It's so funny and well made. The 60's optics are spectacular and I liked the characters a lot. A perfectly told story. For me one of the best flicks this year.

Looks great
3 July 2022
Not a perfect movie. It could use a bunch of laughs more. But the optics are great in a true Jeunett-ish sense. And I liked the story about house robots that try to secure a family from the tyranny of a world conquering AI. I would say give it a try if you like Sci-Fi-Comedies.

Something like an unsettling nightmare
3 July 2022
David Cronenberg is back. With a freaky tale from the future that could have been easily an episode of Black Mirror. But with this unsettling Cronenbergish look and deeply nightmarish feel. You wanted Cronenberg and you got Cronenberg. Don't complain about an unsatisfying ending. You could make the case that the movie promises at times more than it delivers. But isn't that the case for every nightmare too?

Overcooked and inflated
3 July 2022
This one is so overcooked it hurts. It's a Bollywood-Action-Flick and at last when they started to sing and dance I remembered why I'm so deeply in hate with Bollywood. Everything is explained. Everything is inflated with meaning. Everything is so colorful you want to vomit. I admit the movie has pretty cool pictures and effects too so I wont give it just two or three stars.

wtf?
3 July 2022
A Horror-Movie from Alex Garland. A must see! What could go wrong? It seems, a lot. It has great pictures and a creepy score and also the slow pace works in the first half. But in the end it was too much artsy weirdness and pseudo symbolism for me. That was neither scary nor deep. Only wtf. In a bad way.

Not a bad watch.
1 July 2022
Not your usual Liam Neeson stinker we have seen the past years over and over. Maybe because it's a remake of the good little Flemish thriller "De zaak Alzheimer" from 2003 which is still the better version of these two. But as an update of this story of an Alzheimer-Hitmen "Memory" is at least an watchable and entertaining flic.

Much more than your usual gore feast.
27 April 2022
One of the best horror films in recent years. You got the perfect 70s grindhouse pseudo porn look, weird camera angles and music, a tremendous cast and characters (and the lead girl makes her job double as good!). And the main thing: an interesting plot that takes its time to complete the transformation from sleezy pseudo porn into a brutal gory slasher not to stall the audience but because THIS slasher is not only out for blood but for some deeper subtext too that need the time and space to unfold properly until it's ready to release the carnage. You don't see something like that often in a horror flick other than as an on the nose plot device. Here it's owned and cleverly embodied so that you can think about "X" from more than one angles. Well done, Mr. West. Well done!

Femals
11 April 2022
Watchable. Pretents to be a feminist action flic but it's just a B-movie full of women. Femals hitting and shooting each other is not THAT original. Some nice explosions though.

It's a requel for gods sake
11 April 2022
They say, It's a re-quel because it isn't just a sequel and doesn't reboot the original either but hangs closer to the first one than to the rest of the series... Tomato tomato. But does it work? I kinda liked it. Maybe I go down a notch with my vote in a few days because it fails to bring something really new to the table. But the rest is quite entertaining. And hey, it brings Scream back. And it's a requel. Isn't that enough?

Ana de Armas Showreel
11 April 2022
Ana de Armas is simply one of the most beautiful women of our time. Deep Waters plays that card a lot. Aside from that the movie for sure has something else going on but doesn't decide if it wants to be a thriller, love story or a drama piece about deeply disturbed people and so it lacks too much to keep one interested. For a one time watch is not a complete waste of time, as the comeback flick for Adrian Lyne is a bit of a disappointment though.

Nightride (2021)

Want a ride? You get one.
5 March 2022
Loved this one. What a ride!

What an amazing thriller. And a good told one too.

The one shot and real time concept completely took off. A lot of this movie happens on the telephone while the main character is driving. But that's not a bad thing but staying loyal to the one shot concept. It proves the point you could say. And because he is driving there's always movement. And the main character sells it amazingly. I mean he is literally carrying 95% of the movie on his shoulder as an actor. In real time. Fantastic job.

And the camera work is astonishing too. As if you would be sitting with the guy in the car. And not just watching it. You are completely on the ride with the dude. And what a ride it is.

I would love to hear how they planned and mapped the movie out. And how often it took to run the whole thing through until it was done (I counted 2 Scenes where I guess there could have been cuts - not speaking of the obvious one right before the credits - but still an impressiv lot of screen time you have to get right in one shot).

Go see it. It's a unique little thriller.

Jakob's Wife (2021)

A femminist slasher
27 December 2021
Don't listen to the bad reviews. Jakob's Wife is a good movie and an astonishing one in terms of the vampire genre. Why? Because it brings a pretty unique approach to it.

Sexuality will always be one of the underlying themes of that genre, usually approached from a male perspective. You have the vampire master, who penetrates young gorgeous women (with his teeth) to bring them under his spell to enslave them. This one turns it around and plays the subtext with a femminist approach. The Bass-Tone basically is a coming of age story of a middle aged woman who gets freed throughout a vampire-slasher story.

To set this up it needs some time but it's no foul play, you will still get what you came for walking into a genre movie: Good scares and a ton of blood and gore. But on top of that you get fantastic acting, a haunting soundtrack, good camera work and a genuine drama which reflects life through that head-to-leg-perspective. I find that quite refreshing.

Good monster-flick with a serious undertone that starts kinda slow but doesn't fail to deliver. If you are looking for more than just a jump-and-run-gore-orgy this could be for you. And the two kids are just remarkable.

Good one!

An English one-take movie, that is filmed without any cuts (and doesn't cheat), that uses that technique quite impressively. A good and effective drama though anyway with an astonishing ensemble cast.

Not your usual Christmas-flick but a quite cynical family story at the edge of the end of their world. Pretty dark but touching too. One of the best movies in 2021.

Norway is the new Main. One of the best Stephen King stories that had nothing to do with him.
25 December 2021
This was unexpected. An unconventional slow burning Norwegian horror movie about children with superpowers that builds up the intensity so little by little that you begin to realize you sat the last 30 minutes on the edge of the seat after the credits start to roll. Very well done. Very Stephen-Kingish. And the Kids are beyond fantastic too.

Much too slow assassin story without real action or drama that tries to kill its audience with boredom and voice-over. Makes you yell at the screen "stop talking, start shooting for gods sake!". What a bummer.

Don't know what to make of this. It's not bad per se but it's not good either. Something that should be best watched while you're preparing an important speech or your wedding values. It won't distract you, i'll promise.

A Resurrection indeed! BUT...
25 December 2021
Seems IMDB doesn't like this one. For me it's the best of the Matrix sequels so far and that comes as a surprise.

As everyone I loved the original and found the two sequels ok-ish but not really worthy to talk about much. The new installment changed that. When I heard they're gonna do another, I wasn't excited. 20 Years later - how could this be anything else than a complete ripoff to make some bucks?

But boy was I wrong. Resurrections feels more like the original than the sequels and it plays with a good bunch of humor exactly with the expectation I just described. It knows the heritage well, fools around with it a lot and sets up a new enough path to go on further. It looks gorgeou, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are doing a great job and also the new additions are playing well into the existing universe.

After the rather lukewarm two follow ups I really can't understand how this new sequel gets so much hate. Go and see it - it's a Resurrection indeed! BUT be sure to watch the original trilogy before to have it fresh in your mind, The Matrix Resurrections plays with all three predecessors, their storylines and their Iconism like it is common knowledge and believe me you don't wanna miss any of it.

Best movie of the year
16 March 2021
Stunning. The best movie of the year so far. Tom Holland is exceptional. Oscar worthy performance. And a story that is told so beautiful and haunting in different sections. Every one of them could have been a movie on its own. But all together they build a life. So Cherry is a tour de force with a redeeming sent. Go watch it.

I hope they do more of this!
30 April 2020
I really enjoyed this series. It's slow paced, yes, but it's tremendous solid too. And in an artistic way also very gripping and thrilling. And I loved the actors.

I salute the makers because they could have went the obvious road and give the audience the usual SciFi stuff they'd conditioned to expect from a show like this. But instead they choose to take us on a journey of some kind of meditation about what really matters in life. And this journey is not only beautiful shot, but offers some great ideas and unexpected turns too. Sometimes as a kind of side note and not as she focus of the show - but that is the whole point: don't get distracted by the things you might think life is worth living for, let the stars in the sky be the stars, don't miss in your life what is yet full of awe. And the show never preaches. It's always showing instead of pointing with the finger or shouting at us. You have to think about it to get it. But it isn't a far fetched deep secret either. Just go on the journey and let it sink in.

I guess if they had done it a bit more on the nose, the chance for a second season were better. But I'm glad they didn't - a show like this is nothing you get get to see often. But I sure hope they do another one anyway.
