Capricorn One (1977)
Great Potential, So-So Achievement
I saw the trailer for this film as a teen and knew I had to see it. I'm past 35 now and finally saw it. This film had several quality moments. The story had such great potential that perhaps I expected too much. The film is one missed opportunity after another.
Great moments were followed by an unlikely, hurried resolution of the situation. For example, a great getaway scene where the crew escape in a jet and lose a portion of their landing gear in the process is followed by a perfect landing in the middle of the desert without a runway. An interesting discussion of the loneliness of a traveling reporter, is followed with "I want to jump you." The government appears to be pulling of a very good fake Mars landing, abducts an NASA employee without a trace, then can't stop a sloppy reporter. A suspenseful high speed car scene (the fast-motion footage was a little much) ending in the car jumping off a raised bridge and falling five stories into a river, is followed up with the driver swimming to the base of the bridge without a scratch. They reversed the recipe for the final chase scene. Here the reporter finds a crop duster stationed in the middle of a barren desert (Does he service the sage growers of Texas or what?), then one of the best and most exciting aerial chase scenes I've ever seen ensues.
The writing reflects the same story in a different way. Soon after being drawn in by some interesting dialog, I would be jolted with excessive profanity or crudeness.
The film was based on a great story with solid milestones that were connected in a hurried fashion and tainted with repeated profanity. My disappointment in the film wasn't at all the fault of the actors. They remained more believable than the situations they were attempting to portray.
The Wrong Trousers (1993)
Fantastic, entertaining work of art, with no Hollywood smut
This is a clever picture that gets better the more times you watch it. The attention to detail is amazing. It makes you wonder over and over again - How did they do that?
I have this on DVD and enjoy taking time to check some segments out frame by frame to catch all the background details like book titles on the shelf and news paper headlines. It's enjoyable for youth and adults alike.
Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
Looking for a clean classic movie? This is not it.
This movie must have been scandalous for it's day. There are some bright spots (Good acting, Moon River, Buddy Ebsen, Mickey Rooney). However, this movie is a trip through the gutter. It smells of substance abuse and adultery.
