Classic efforts by Wilde and the ever-lovely Jean Wallace
2 December 2006
That includes an extra point or two because I've met several of the auto racers who helped stage the 'competition" scenes, heard their stories about the production, and enjoyed tramping around almost all of what's left of the old Paramount Ranch racetrack. The track is still accessible as part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, inland from Malibu, north and west from Los Angeles.

Both the movie and the experiences with the racers and the track were enjoyable; the racers are stellar, the movie, not so much.

Wilde and Wallace were kind of a prototypical pair of capable actors, and in this outing the material doesn't inhibit their natural inclinations. The story gets told, the action moves right along, for the most part, and the ending follows the beginning and middle.

As a theatrical film, I'd probably not have gone to see it if I weren't a racing fan and it hadn't been 25 cents at the base theater.

It was a treat
16 June 2006
I have but two impressions from this film: I saw it with my mother, at a premier showing in Los Angeles. Rosie was there in front of the screen, skinny legs and all, and threw up her arms and shouted, "I've been waiting a year for this!" as the opening titles flashed her name into view.

Ana Maria Alberghetti's singing was beautiful, but the director made such a closeup of her face as she sang, I remember only that her lips were flattened into a funny shape, and the mechanics of her singing overwhelmed all else.

And that's the truth.

Auto racing plays a part ...
24 May 2006
This may be one of very few opportunities to see real racers in real race cars on a real - late and lamented - racetrack. Pebble Beach was an early Mecca for road racing fans, and while there are some discontinuities and incongruous events in the story, some of what is shown on-screen will be of value to motor sport historians, who should be able to identify the drivers and cars. As a novelty, perhaps, but valuable.

John Ireland and Dorothy Malone went on to do some creditable work, and are not bad here, but to be honest, they don't have that much to work with. Not entirely a time-waster, at any rate.
