Blackball (2003)
Avoid this film! It is just awful
If you are a comedian and starring in a film, I would have thought at some point you'd look at your own script. This obviously didnt happen with Blackball, a film so bad even Johnny Vegas isnt funny in it. If I could speak to Vince Vaughn I would say, 'Vince, i'm so sorry, please promise me you never think of starring in a British film again'. The main problem is Kayes character. He starts off as a horrible **** who you hope gets thumped or loses a bowls match or just dies. He doesnt and succeeds but carries on being a real idiot. You dont side with him, you dont see what he's done to woo the girl and you fail to like him at all. We are then supposed to support him. There are no jokes, it's slow paced and before he takes on the Aussies, you wish it had finished. They then play the Australians and the match, altho shown in highlights, feels like you've sat thru the whole match - twice. Just a poor poor film with nothing going for it but a song by Doves. I'd happily never watch any scene in this movie ever again - please don't watch it.
Made (2001)
A great little film
Obviously people will put this up against Swingers. Written by the same person and with the same two main actors - but this isnt Swingers. It isnt their characters a little older. It's a totally different film! Yes its not as good, I think thats due to Doug Liman not directing but it has some great scenes and very funny moments. Watch the outtakes on the DVD and you'll see how well the actors interact and keep the scenes fresh and real thanks to not keeping tight to the scripted dialogue. It definately gets better the more you watch it but the prudes are right - theres a little too much of the 'f' word. Bring on the next collaberation. Now Favreau and Vaughn have directed and produced, the third will be a stormer. Its a shame they peaked so soon on so little with Swingers but place Made away from their first and it really is a funny and enjoyable flick.
The Office (2001)
Great characters, great jokes, great show
This is superb comedy. A mockumentary about a typical 9-5 office, this comedy delivers every time. This is a show with hilarious characters. Sad and pathetic but ultimately
hilarious! Best of all it gives the viewer the respect to laugh when they want - no annoying canned laughter for the dumb. Whoever didnt like it is either from Ohio or has never had a job in their life - either way, you're missing out on one of the best shows ever! 9/10 for both series! although they say they're not making a third series, theres hopefully a xmas
special in the making!
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Not as big a disappointment as Phantom Menace, but close
I'm not a huge sci fi fan but loved The Matrix. I couldnt wait for the second and was really looking forward to it. But its hype. Its taken itself too seriously and the actual film is poor. I didnt care for any of the characters. The only one I would have been gutted about dying was Agent Smith, clearly thats not right. There were two great sequences worth seeing on the big screen. The car chase and the 100 Smith fight. Once you've seen those there is no need to see the film ever again. Away from the effects, the plot is weak and dull. With the effects, the fights are overlong and at one point there are five minutes of blocking one another which is more like kung fu line dancing. Awful. Its then ended with 'You never know someone until you fight them' or something like that yet in 5 minutes they only hit each other once. Trinity seems to lose most fights shes ever in and quickly. Morpheus looked fat and was so boring when he actually spoke. Its no surprise younger boys are going ape about this film, give them a bit and it'll all be forgotten. When are we actually going to see awesome effects in an awesome film? The third installment? I really doubt it. 3/10
Swingers (1996)
Too cool for words
Swingers is just about the coolest film on the planet. It's so laid back it's horizontal. There aren't enough words in a thesaurus to describe how good this movie is! Watch and enjoy. The direction from Doug Liman is awesome and the acting matches. It's funny but not in your face, it's hip but doesn't care and it just makes for a great picture. Heather Graham looks gorgeous at the end as an added bonus for the guys too!
