A double whammy of story and art
12 April 2014
This documentary is one of a kind. The story of an eccentric, possible mentally ill mystery woman and her prolific photographic work. If the move was just about her art, it would be extraordinary, as her work was. The story of her bizarre and secret life just enhance the film. For a first time effort from John Maloof, this one is very well done. The film starts with those who knew her, openly expressing their amazement to her unknown and mysterious life as a street photographer, filled with the images she kept a secret from everyone. You wonder how someone with her talent could keep it a secret for so long. Maloof plays a significant role in front of the camera as it is necessary for him to tell the story. When it is over, you are still left with a sense of disappointment. You know more about this mystery woman, yet you still crave for more..............And, the images still haunt you. This is one movie I will see numerous times.

The showing I attended had Jeff Garlin participate in a Q & A. It was entertaining as he detailed the process and effort Maloof put in to make this gem of a documentary.

The added bonus was my friends brother was in the film. Very exciting.

Please see this film if you can. Please see the photography of Vivian Maier if you can.

Brotherhood of dull.
16 May 2013
You ever watch a movie and you keep waiting for something to happen that made sense? You ever watch a movie with horrible dialogue and horrible acting, hoping at some point it would get better?

This is one of those movies and, it never gets better. Not all acting is going to be great and not all dialogue is perfect, however in this film, it never got even close to mediocre.

I'm guessing this movie rose out of the vampire genre that was so popular.....Maybe it still is.....and thus, was made, without much thought.

This movie reminded me of "It's ALive" from the 70s. The acting and dialogue were that bad......The only difference was the fake baby in "It's Alive" added campy humor.

The one plus.....The lead actress was pleasant to look at.

War of the Worlds: A Multitude of Idols (1988)
Season 1, Episode 5
5/10
X Files before the X Files.
29 August 2007
Late 80s sci-fi show based upon the 1953 movie. The premise is original, but the writing wasn't. Far from horrible, far from excellent. If you are a sci-fi fan, you most likely would enjoy this. The show was re-tooled for the second season, which indicated the studio's meddling with the show, which in turn was it's demise. Plot holes in sci-fi can be over looked from time to time(a team of 4 try to follow and stop an alien invasion),and that was not the primary problem here. The biggest was weak characters and over the top characters. With a little better writing, this show would have been much better and survived much longer.

3: The Dale Earnhardt Story (2004 TV Movie)
Hero worship sickness....
15 December 2004
Certainly this movie had an agenda to make Earnhardt a folk hero who's only misgivings were father son relationships. What bothered me the most was his death was never covered ie his refusal to adhere to safety and most of all, his obtuse and stubborn behavior when he was told his seat belts were installed improperly by Bill Simpson of Simpson Safety Products. This led to his untimely death and it would have been a good lesson of life to see that a larger then life character like Earnhardt, can be mortal. If you are a NASCAR fan, certainly this movie is for you. The race footage was better then I anticipated, but lacked the realism first brought ot us by Frankenheimer in Grand Prix.

Tortilla Soup (2001)
Nice, but nowhere near as captivating as Ang Lee's orignal....
16 December 2003
Tortillia Souip is a remake of Ang Lee's Yin shi nan nu. The original, even in subtitle form is far superior to this version. To me,it is much like seeing an original Renoir' recreated in a paint by number kit.

A bit over the top soap opera about football
10 September 2003
It certainly is edgy, but cliches' and contrived story lines tend to make it go over the top. Football fans will watch it because it is about football. Non football fans may watch it because it gives plenty of bad that keeps humans interest(See reality TV), much like a train wreck. The show is not that bad.......Just not that outstanding.....

Monday Night Mayhem (2002 TV Movie)

A friendly portrait of Cosell......Still entertaining.
15 January 2002
An entertaining behind the scenes look at Monday Night Football from it's inception to the departure of Howard Cosell.

The movie is extremely friendly to Cosell, and is based mostly upon him, and Roone Arlidge. Not much dirty laundry is aired during this movie....Of course there are the well known incidents such as Cosell getting drunk and vomiting on Meredith's boots, Chet Forte's gambling, the clashing of egos in the broadcast booth, and the little monkey comment that caused so much furor.

John Turturro as Cosell seemed to be a stretch. I felt Turturro was a little over the top in his portrayal, but not so much it was annoying.

Grand Prix (1966)
A thrill to watch 35 years later....
14 May 2001
The best motorsports film made. Frankenheimer received cooperation from all the F1 teams in filming this movie, allowing it to avoid the cheesy typical Hollywood race movie(Days of Thunder, Driven). His desire to display the sport as it really is, made this movie spectacular. The race footage was way ahead of it's time, and still creates a thrill in me whenever I watch it.

Corny rip off of the Star Wars era
3 December 2000
At the time this movie came out, the special effects were good, but the rest of the movie was lame. I saw it again today on cable and cringed at the cliche' lines and numerous factual errors. That robot Vincent was too corny. A rip off of the Star Wars duo of C3PO and R2D2. What amazed me the most when I first saw the movie in 1979, was the reaction of everyone else....people actually cheered when that lame Vincent robot saved another robot from death. I looked at my brothers and asked what bizarre. Lawrence Welk influenced place we wandered into?. Turns out it was Omaha.
