Frustrating dialog
10 March 2024
I really love the premise. The production quality is great; visuals and audio is very good. Acting too. The problem I have is with the dialog.

Many "mysterious" productions, both TV and movies, struggle with keeping a natural dialog. It seems like they feel a need to stop the dialog from revealing too much too soon, so they instead simply chose to "not talk about it".

There is so much going on in the show, and I know if I experienced almost any of it I would grab the nearest person and talk about it, ask about what just happened, and not settle for silence as a reply. I would try to understand what is happening and then share it with those I trust and care about. This however, is not happening and I find that both distracting and annoying.

A family treat
27 February 2024
Granted, this movie has lowered the sense of danger compared to the book. It would maybe feel more like a true Roald Dahl experience if for example the outdoor winter had more of a bite; the cold never really bothered anyone. But as a family experience, this movie works in every way-and we all went home smiling.

The visuals, the craftsmanship, the design of everything from chocolates to costumes; everything is delicious and wonderful. The song and dance sequences work well, and so does the dialog.

The Gene Wilder version has in my opinion too many immersion-breaking moments that simply are too dated. This movie has just one: the synchronization of the body movement of the Oompa Loompa to the head of the amazing Hugh Grant (who is absolutely splendid, perfect).

With a pinch more danger, and a perfectly animated "orange man" this could be a classic.

Violent Night (2022)

An Instant Classic!
23 December 2023
The Christmas movie that has it all: charm, humor, action, witty one-liners, plenty of gore (which in itself isn't essential), Christmas traditions and magic. Because the movie takes Santa seriously, the entire movie is just so much fun to watch!

This gory yuletide adventure, complete with a magical Santa Claus, is a must-watch for those seeking a merry mix of action and holiday magic.

With a dash of holiday spirit and a sprinkle of plot twists, "Violent Night" manages to balance the naughty and nice, leaving me entertained and in the Christmas spirit until the credits rolls in.

Expect funny confrontations, incredible fight choreography, some great cat and mouse chases, some slow and tender moments, and a hero that finds his purpose-in short, expect a hell of a ride! The action-packed story is engaging from start to finish. The film's characters, colorful villains, and plenty of festive charm create a unique cinematic experience.

This is my new xmas movie, and I really hope they make another. I want more!

Not smart enough
27 June 2023
I had hoped this show would be realistically smart, but again and again I'm disappointed. For now, I keep watching as the value of the conversations I have, inspired by the show, outweigh the immersion-breaking moments.

There are solid moments, followed by the most predictable and cringeworthy moments-and not in a good way. It would be great if the writers would focus more on consistency. The need for comic relief and drama should not break character.

The setting, context and characters are almost written realistically. The actors do well I think, when they struggle it's because of the implausible performances they are required to deliver. It's like the writers just gave up on vetting ideas, antics, or intrigues; or as if they ran out of time or money.

Frankly, it feels like they wrote the.

Absolutely lovely
29 May 2023
The show has intriguing characters, smart dialogue, excellent visuals, and a very interesting context or subject matter.

It's culturally interesting-and I feel it's also culturally honest.

It is so lovely to see a show that you can enjoy without being distracted by poor choices; it is consistently pleasing to watch and listen to.

The process of getting to know the characters through the stories being told is what makes it worth my time. It's also nice that I feel I learn a little while being entertained.

I highly recommend this show. It's as good and riveting as Black Bird. I look forward to watching the last two episodes.

Enjoyed every minute
10 April 2023
I thought this would be a much lighter, funnier and much less entertaining movie - instead I got a Mission Possible kinda movie, but with more entertaining characters and story; a movie I enjoyed from start to finish.

Admittedly, I started watching with few expectations. It was listed as a suspense, comedy action - I remembered having watched the trailer.. But the movie delivered on all counts. Mostly action, some suspense and only some comedic moments. In my mind - it struck the perfect balance and was true to itself throughout. I was immersed from beginning to end.

There isn't much I would cut, nor change. The dialog, music, the characters, the casting - I thought it was all very entertaining.

Shrinking (2023– )

Off to a great start!
8 February 2023
This is a warm and fresh show, where most of the situations feel genuine. The brief moments where the writing and pacing stumble or feels less honest, could just be a matter of getting used to the cast (though most likely it is due to them asking for the laugh, and not the butter).

The easiest comparison might be "if Ted Lasso was a shrink" dealing with patients, and not a football team. The potential for this show is huge, as the client list could potentially be endless. What I fear though, is that they cling to a short list of regulars instead of introducing new and interesting patients on an irregular basis.

Look forward to seeing where this show goes!

Great Thrill Ride
31 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoy this movie a lot. I'm the biggest fan of Grounshog Day, so of course I love the premise of iterating your day to perfection.

I enjoy the idea, the visuals, the tech - almost everything except for the "Rube Goldberg sequence" when they visit General Brigham (1:19). Instead of leaving with the device, Cage could simply have plunged that thing into his leg right there in the office (Rita would execute him right after). This would free time to give Cage other (equally action heavy) situations to lose the ability (ie blood).

Emily Blunt is fantastic in this movie. Tom Cruise is believable. The J Squad is a bit of a cliché, but it works. I get a strong Alien 2 vibe when watching this - which I seem to remember is just a good thing.

Not very juicy
24 August 2022
I'm a massive fan of both GoldenEye (the game) and Perfect Dark. I was really having high hopes for this documentary..

If you work in the video games industry you will probably be disappointed. There are some good bits, but they are drowned by the much less interesting segments. I kept hoping it would improve, but it didn't.

Anthony Hopkins is fantastic - the movie could have been a classic
7 July 2022
Great film. Really enjoyed it.

Anthony Hopkins is fantastic in this role, he steals every scene. Claire Forlani does a great job.

The rest of the cast works very well - though Brad Pitt at times delivers a lackluster performance that only at times manages to reflect Black's evolving understanding of the human condition. His performance however, did not get in the way of enjoying the movie.

Overall, the pacing, dialog, characters and situation is intriguing. I find it hard to believe that a truncated version would have the same emotional impact.

Highly recommended!

Good acting - simple & predictable story
16 April 2022
Watched episode 1-3 and when half of episode 4 seemed to be even less interesting, we stopped watching. We felt it was predictable and frankly not very smart.

Gary Oldman plays an interesting character. Kristin Scott Thomas character however, behaves like an amateur.

The other characters further diminishes the credibility of the show. They are caricatures you've seen a dozen times before. Very little new here, which is a shame. We really wanted to like the show - but no.

Loved every moment
15 February 2022
I am rarely totally engrossed and immersed in the sci-fi movies I watch, but this one managed all the way.

I watched it at home, but with a very nice sound setup - allowing the soundscape to surround me, and pull me in. Loved it. The soundtrack is perfect.

The acting works really well, the dialog feels genuine, the relationships too - I found it easy to enjoy. A bit of exposition that I would rather be without, but the story allows it.

Structurally, the story is maybe a bit too simple, but greed is rarely complicated. Hopefully the second part will elevate the other elements of the conflict.

Technically, I bought the sci-fi elements during the first viewing. In retrospect however, there are several choices I found less palpable. I'll leave it at that.

Obviously, haven given this movie a 10, I highly recommend watching it. Make sure you have good audio.

A resilient high spirit is very inspiring
19 March 2021
First episode is not what you might expect, or rather - you may need to watch two episodes to align your mind to the spirit of the show. I watched half the first episode, and gave it up - until it won a Golden Globe.

I figured the show must have some qualities I missed, so I continued watching - and by the time I finished the second episode, I fell in love with the entire show.

Except for a couple of situations that could benefit from being toned down, the entire show is such a positive, uplifting and enjoyable experience - I devoured the remaining episodes.

Now, weeks later, I keep revisiting moments that I found particularly inspiring and funny. I cannot wait for season 2 and 3 and ..

A superb metaphor with stunning visuals
5 October 2019
The internal processing is the focus in this movie, not the incarnations of it. It's a sci-fi setting, but it didn't have to be.

In my opinion Brad Pitt does his best acting in his career. Well, everyone does a great job. Not once did something break the immersion.

I'm still actively thinking about the movie. It has definitely had an impact, like any good poem.

Jason Bourne (I) (2016)

Jason Bourne is going in circle
6 December 2016
First of all, it feels like I've seen all of this before.

In my opinion the first movie worked great because Bourne moved with a purpose: he brought the movie goer on his journey to puzzle together his forgotten past.

This time however, I felt like I was just watching people and cars moving around in a clumsy cat and mouse game with no really exciting revelations.

The movie was bigger; more cars got smashed, more fires, more punches too I would guess. But none of it made Bourne any cooler, more lethal or efficient. A lot of it felt very contrived and convenient, and ultimately uninspired.

It is long passed due to let go of the past, which is the entire point of the movie. But that simple point should have been the first third of the movie.

Predictable storyline & contrived comedy
22 July 2012
Ops..

After watching the pilot, we really had high hopes for this series. It seemed smart, entertaining and interesting. But this episode was a big disappointment. We couldn't bear to even finish the episode..

The conversation is fast, which we generally appreciate. For this episode however, the acting and dialog was hysterical and in no way charming, or clever. Worst of all the comedic moments are predicable and feels contrived, and therefore in no way funny.

I'll watch the rest of this episode later, without the wife, and if it picks up I'll edit this review.

EDIT: So, I watched the rest alone and it did pick up, but the rating stays the same. There are too many annoyingly and silly moments in this episode; uninspired dialog and contrived comedy.

No soul
21 August 2011
Decent acting, sure. But the core, dialog and development offers very little to anyone older than 16.

The movie has one or two memorable moments. The rest was just bubble gum.

Given the outset, adding any delightful, surprising, thought provoking or interesting situations would be hard, but very possible. Though I obviously didn't watch this movie for depth, but when the brain is missing I do expect the heart to be compensated. This movie just simply failed to deliver.

If asked I wouldn't be able to pinpoint any particular reason to recommend this movie.

Bullitt (1968)

Simply the best.
28 January 2004
Enough about the spectacular car chase - the action is not what drives this movie. Unless you feel like taking part of a routine baby sitting of a star witness going sour, and of following the tedious work of closing the case - don't watch this fantastic classic. It is at the moment my absolute favourite movie.

To enjoy Bullitt you have to be able to sit down and enjoy watching a team of cops taking it slow while trying to do their work. If you don't have the patience or lack the capacity to look past the superficial action, then go away! Watch something else.. please. You will probably hate it, call it dated, boring and slow.

SEVEN with less rain and more color
10 August 2003
It has been a while since I saw it last, but as it's not mentioned in the other review I wanted to add a comment regarding the use of light and color.

What I enjoyed the most with this movie was actually that it didn't rain all through the movie. The weather varied causing the lighting to shift as well as the mood. Still, if memory serves, it was creepy.

So if you are tired of the typical wet, dark and gloomy setting of Fincher, but want to see something SEVEN'ish, then try this title.
