No way near as bad as everyone is making out!
15 May 2000
For Gods sake the Lord of the Rings was christ-knows how many pages long. How was it supposed to be turned into a word for word animation?! Even if Bahkshi had been 100% faithful to the book there still would have been complaints that the way the characters were drawn were nothing like the way readers imagined them. A book like Lord of the Rings is almost impossible to film satisfactorily because it has such a HUGE following and everyone had their own opinion of what it should be like.

The animation was groundbreaking for its time and added an certain, dread-filled and stylish atmosphere to the film. What did you want? Disney? The fact that the film stops half way through the story is admittedly a fault but not of the film itself (however i'd agree with statements that say it's overlong because it is.... but then so is the book). The actors used to voice the characters were wonderfully authentic (esp.Hurt) and niggling quibbles aside (the 'Aruman' thing) this is an entertaining and worthwhile film for fans of the book. To be honest i don't think you can favourably compare any book and subsequent film. The mediums are too different.

A Warning to the Curious (1972 TV Movie)
WHERE CAN I GET THIS MASTERPIECE?
13 May 2000
This is an unparalelled piece of British eerieness. Filmed on location at some lonely piece of coastline in East Anglia 'A Warning to the Curious' is based on one of respected ghost story author M R James stories. It concerns a legend regarding three buried crowns of anglesea. The main character goes searching for one of these (hes a historian or something) and wakes up the nasty (and very scary) ghoul of William Ager the crowns protector. Cue very sinister yet never obvious happenings and a creepy ending. This is part of a superb series of MR James ghost stories serialised by the BBC and is well worth seeking out. I myself am desperate for a copy!!!

Funny Games (1997)
Utterly nasty
13 May 2000
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this film late one night and was totally unprepared for what lay in store for me...This film is pure, unadulterated thrilling horror. I won't go into details about the plot since every other review here has and you've probably got the idea by now. In response to those who say it is 'hilarious' it's not, it's anything but, in response to those who go on about the directors message (which he hits home with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer....) i say it doesn't matter what the message is, as pure spine chilling, tense entertainment that glues you to the screen this film hits the spot.

The actress who plays the mother is superb, scarily believable as are the performances of the two psychopaths (one of whom looks scarily like Gary Barlow). Several scenes in this film as so hard hitting even a seasoned horror fan like myself found myself thinking 'can i continue to watch this???' And there is the brilliant relief-then-fear again moments when you think things are going to be ok but believe me they're never going to be ok....

(Spoilers)A few flaws are the annoying asides to the camera and the ridiculous rewind scene and possibly even the downbeat ending which no doubt contribute to the directors overall 'message' but are at odds with the plot. All in all i have never seen a film as shockingly nasty and unrelenting as this. Watch it if you dare!

The Woman in Black (1989 TV Movie)
WHY CAN'T WE BUY THIS FILM IN ENGLAND???!!!!
13 May 2000
As everyone else has said this film is genuinely, 100% utterly and totally pant-wettingly scary! Forget the lame over hyped Blair Witch and teen 'horror' francises THIS neglected gem is REAL horror, once seen NEVER forgotten.

The subtle, barely noticeable 'there she is in the background!' appearances of said woman are unbelievably eerie and the moments the young lawyer hero spends at her deserted house on some godforsaken masrsh chill you to the bone. The film invokes a lucid atmosphere of dread and will stick in your mind for a long time afterwards.

Without using any shock tatics and using a budget of a TV series this film manages to be one of the scariest films in history. Think of the scariest film you've seen; The Woman in Black is scarier.

One question remains: WHEN WILL BE BRITS BE ABLE TO OWN A COPY????

Fun
13 May 2000
Yep this movie's alot of fun. Its very watchable and yes the script and (especially) the acting are utterly lame and laughable but it all adds to the fun. Toss in Hugh Grant acting like an idiot, some guy with bad hair, a few semi clad females, a couple of Ken Russells trademark bizarro 'dream sequences' and a paper mache worm and you have an evenings entertainment. Class.
