Dallas Doll (1994)
DALLAS DOLL - A Delight!
I saw Dallas Doll many years ago at Outfest, the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian film festival. It was the Closing Night film. DGA1 (the theater) was packed and the audience absolutely ate this film up. It was a laugh-fest. It's such a crazy, wild, fun ride and so very Australian in its comedic sensibilities. Like all films, one can find things to criticize - this is far from a perfect film. But, personally, Dallas Doll has such a crazy spirit I was able to forgive it's blemishes. One of the things I enjoyed about the film is the writer-director's romanticism of Texas and Texans. It's a hoot to see a non-native's take on Texas. So pick apart this film if you must but I think it is absolutely worth watching!
Une parisienne (1957)
A light, charming, cheeky comedy with a lot of sass.
Bridgette Bardot, looking as sexy as ever, plays a spoiled but innocent daughter of a French Ambassador. She cons one of her father's top aides (womanizer MICHEL) into marrying her and it turns out to be the best thing for both of them. Michel is soon flirting with his old girlfriends and in order to teach him a lesson, Bridgette flirts heavily with a married PRINCE CHARLES. Michel is surprised by his jealousy. A cat-and-mouse game ensues between Brigdette and Michel ("I'll have an affair"..."No you won't"...) And finally Michel realizes she just might and vows to give up all the other ladies in his life. Bridgette and Michel settle comfortably into their happily-ever-after while Prince Charles jets home to England.
It's an admittedly light piece but it's incredibly charming. While some may fault it as a product of it's time, I found that completely enjoyable. Worthy of a rental.
Fucking Åmål (1998)
Wonderfully, charming teen romantic comedy.
SHOW ME LOVE (the US title) is a wonderfully charming teen romantic comedy. It's loaded with heart, soul, and truth about the doldrums of growing up in a one-horse town. Director Lukas Moodyson shows a wonderful gift for both screenwriting and coaching well-rounded performances out of young actors. If you can find it in the video stores, it's so worth the rental.
