Snuff (1975)
This Snuff needs no Candle
I do not want to repeat former comments about the low quality of this film but as a fan of Joe Bob Briggs I do give it one breast for 2-3 gratuitous topless scenes and 1 lacy pantie scene. Perhaps it should have been subtitled Snuff w/ a little naughty stuff. It is a good 100 min of escape and enjoyment if you accept that most films are made on a shoestring and this one did not disappoint on a dollar for dollar basis. Think Waterworld and Heaven's Gate. Movies should be seen as entertainment kind of like jokes or short stories. There are classic jokes (The Aristocrats) and classic short stories (Gift of the Magi), but bad jokes and bad short stories don't mean the genre is bad. Roll with campy humor/horror. It is one of the last vestiges of the vaudeville concepts of over the top presentations
The Junction Boys (2002)
What was the message?
We've all seen the "Win One for the Gipper Format". Junction Boys appears to show what would have happened if the Hitler Youth were coached by Jozef Mengele. Bryant's sadism and complete disregard for player safety and health isn't good coaching, it is ego run mad. The intimidation of players and insistence they play with broken vertebrae, and complications from heatstroke doesn't show dedication it shows the power of a cruel leader to abuse his relationship with exploited working class kids. I don't know the later health problems experienced by the Junction Boys but I am voting for "diverse and serious" If this was some attempt to tap into the "Duty Honor Country" vein since 9-11 it missed the mark. Maybe next month ESPN can try a more sweeping epic "The Caligula Boys"
Badlands (1973)
Charlie & Caryl get gussied up
Thinly veiled and highly romanticized tale of the spree killings of Charlie Starkweather and Caryl Fugate in Nebraska during the late 50's. The choice of Sheen and Spacek glosses over the lack of likeability of the real characters. Hardly a "James Dean" type the real Charlie oozed loserness. Caryl garnered more sympathy because of her young age but she still was clearly involved in the murders. Although the film creates an image of estranged yet endearing youth against the system it ultimately is a fairy tale. Read a book about the Starkweather/Fugate muders and you will find them about as heroic as OJ Simpson and Kato Kaelin
