Beautiful and moving film.
10 May 2004
I was fortunate to see this film at the TriBeCa Film Festival and it was unlike anything I have ever seen. Morrison took this decaying piece of film and breathed new life and style into it, creating a visual experience that is so striking and original. Accented by a hauntingly beautiful score from Michael Gordon, the entire piece comes together and seems to contrast simplicity with complexity, death with life. Absolutely stunning. (The score is available on Michael Gordon's CD "Light is Calling" which includes a copy of the entire film that is playable on any Mac or PC. Viewing it this way hardly does the film justice considering the format, but it's worth checking out if you have no other way of seeing the film. )

Love Object (2003)
what horror used to be like
9 January 2004
I was just searching around the 'net to see if this film was available on DVD. I saw Love Object at the TriBeCa Film Fest, intrigued by the subject as described in the film's program blurb. It turned out to be very entertaining and well-made, considering it's a low-budget independent horror movie. Love Object managed to capture the spirit of horror movies that is lacking in the genre today; a perfect blend of suspense, camp, and social commentary, revolving around a rather taboo subject. The actors were better than one expects from horror, and the photography in the film was beautiful. All the major elemental crafts of a film came together to make this one creepy, effective, and pleasant to look at, all at once.

Not to mention quite disturbing. (p.s. It's absolutely a stellar date movie :)

Hot to Trot (1988)
you get what you came for...
22 July 2003
why anyone would choose to watch this movie and then turn around and complain about how awful it is baffles me. you're given a silly title, Hot to Trot, Bobcat Goldthwait as a star, and a blurb mentioning a talking horse. how could this movie NOT be utterly stupid? of COURSE it is stupid! and that's why it's great! sure, the jokes are juvenile and rather stupid, though in my opinion there are a few zingers in there (how is a three-stoogie horse humping a Volvo NOT funny?) but sometimes that's what you want to watch: utter stupidity. this movie succeeds as a brainless comedy with easy to grasp humor and blatant...stupidity! i sincerely doubt it ever tried to be more than just that. so, for what it is, it's a huge success, and if you want to sit back and not think and enjoy an 80s flavored 80 minutes with a talking horse and an annoying guy whose jockey pants are too tight, then by all means, i highly highly recommend this movie. if you're too uptight to relax and enjoy it on some level, then yeah, skip it. i've personally seen it at least 20 times since it opened in theaters when i was 9 years old, it's in my video collection and a favorite to pop in when i'm sick, cleaning or trying to get someone to laugh and feel silly, and yeah it sits surrounded by films by the likes of Wim Wenders and Jeunet, above The Seventh Seal and to the right of Dr. Strangelove.
