Invasion (2021)
Slow, boring story about nothing. Skip this.
Had high hopes - the production values are tops, but the scenes and dialog are plodding. Every scene is at minimum 2-3 times as long as it needed to be. So much useless dialog and setup, it's as if they only had 3 episodes of material, but the contract called for 10 episodes. I gave up after 3 episodes, but upon reading the other reviews, I still didn't miss anything. Life's too short, watch something else.
Production value: pretty good
Story: what story?
Plot: maybe season 2 will have one.
Actors: did their job with what was given to them.
Dialog: so many useless words and scenes,
it could have just been a 2-hour movie.
The Night Agent (2023)
Just awful writing, dialog, plot devices...
I read all the hyped-up reviews and was excited for something good to watch while waiting for the new '23 seasons of the flagship shows to drop.
Even the first scene had some implausibilities, but I kept going. After the stupid fakeout of a cop finding her in the closet (ridiculous!) was so unbelievable, I turned it off immediately, not making it even half way through the pilot.
Netflix will most likely cancel this before the 2nd season, and now, might even want to stop releasing whole seasons on day one as a cost-saving measure, as most NF decision-makers would have seen how bad this was and likely pulled the plug after 3-4 episodes.
Save yourself. Something better will come along soon.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Garbage movie, run away ass fast as you can.
The directors' experience before making this drivel was a DN Snake video an SD c g get s movie 'Swiss Army Man'. That's all you need to know.
That this and 'Oscar' are even mentioned in the same sentence tells you how broken the nominating process is.
I don't really know who's ramming this movie down everyone's throats, but I've seen more plausible plots in old Troma movies. Here, the creators just throw everything at the screen, hoping something will stick. They figure if the plot/location/time/scene changes often enough, then people will be too busy trying to make sense of it all instead of realizing they're being duped.
Possibly the stupidest movie I've seen in 2-3 decades, and I have a pretty high tolerance for schlock.
A Most Violent Year (2014)
Slow burn? How about No Burn?
I want my 2 hours back. Caught myself half way through still waiting for something to happen, felt 'this is quite a long setup', hoping for the pace to pick up. Spoiler: it never did. Save yourself and save 2 hours of your life.
This was just awful,
No Sudden Move (2021)
So much on-screen talent made for an enjoyable 2 hours. (spoliers)
A 1955 period piece that really made you feel like you were alive back then and were living it. The casting of every character was spot on, and the story zips along without any slow spots in my opinion.
You really root for the underdogs here, and the gritty buddy movie component of Cheadle and Del Toro worked well. If only there were a way to make a sequel. Speaking of, I really wish (spoiler here) that when BDT got shot, she kicked him out of the car and drove off, thinking he was dead, but then we find out his flask saved him. That would have given Soderbergh an option for a pre/sequel for this solid pairing.
Also - Why doesn't Ray Liotta work anymore? He was as menacing as can be (as long as he keeps his voice from getting whiny). Brendan Fraser was near unrecognizable with his weight gain (in prep for a movie where he has to get even heavier). He never disappoints though - been a fan ever since Bedazzled and even more surprising - a psychopathic prison guard in The Affair.
All in all, a solid effort by Solderbergh.
Law & Order: Organized Crime (2021)
I'm embarrassed for everyone involved in this show.
First, the plotline. You've seen it in every lowgrade cop movie. - cop wants revenge for murdered family member, only this is even worse because the pedigree says it should be better than it was. All of a sudden, Stabler's speaking Italian and supposed to be some sort of mob chaser? Give me a break.
To be honest, we gave up after 20 minutes because it was *just THAT bad*.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
sometimes you can have 'too much' Jim Carrey
Just awful, and *not* a kids movie by any stretch. If I made the mistake of taking my kids to this dreck, I'd ask for my money back.
Jim Carrey unchecked is never a good thing. Ron Howard, you should be ashamed.
I gave it 2 stars for the capable supporting cast who are also victims in this travesty. In the words of Robert DeNiro's character in Jack and Jill - "Burn It and destroy all copies"
The Wilde Wedding (2017)
Malkovich and Close could read the weather for 2 hours and it would be captivating
Lucky for this movie then, because the dialog is at times forced, shallow and unrealistic. Regardless, it's enjoyable to see the greats do what they can with so little 'meat' to work with. Wasted talent.
The Condemned (2007)
Surprisingly good. Give it a chance.
Disregard that the fight scenes could have used less camera shake, they got the point across. Who needs more detailed gratuitous violence anyway, I mean, isn't that the point of this movie? Good plot, good acting, and it moves along at a good pace. Poignant commentary on our times.
It (2017)
Stupid movie, and complete ripoff of stranger things.
Add stars if you like stranger things. I don't.
Cliche batch of outcasts driving bicycles around getting into trouble. Big whoop. So unoriginal, that they even hired some of the same characters. Shame on you, WB.
3 stars because there was *some* good casting...
The Florida Project (2017)
Way overrated. 0-stars If not for Dafoe.
He gets 3 stars all his own just for carrying it on his back. The smallest of 'small' movies. You will forget about it by the time you leave the theater. Watch for free on cable? Sure, just to see what the buzz was about, but DO NOT pay to rent this, you'll wish you hadn't. Two of the 3 main characters in the movie were either vile, obnoxious, or poorly acted, leaving Willem to do the heavy lifting of the scant storyline. Sad. I had high hopes.
Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)
Strange - everyone is either a 1 or a 10 on this.
I'm a 4. Some good points and cinematography, but implausibility abounds, starting with that fact that he went back to 'help' the cops after the boat deal? Ridiculous, who would do that? And that act got him only 4 years? Equally ridiculous. In real life, the prosecutor would try and make him serve all 3 peoples' sentences just to prove a point. Scenes and motivations need to be believable for me to be entertained. That was not the case here. Save your 2 hours, you're not missing anything here.
Random Hearts (1999)
A complete mess
Motivations of the characters was completely unbelievable. Many times throughout the movie you find yourself thinking that the characters' actions were totally illogical, making it impossible to identify with the characters. Possibly, the writing / direction were completely out of sync making the movie painful to sit through. I wanted my money back from the video store...
