Jurassic Park III (2001)
Bad way to finish the trilogy
Jurassic Park III is one of the worst films that I have seen this year. This movie has just about sealed the fate of the Jurassic Park franchise. I didn't expect the movie to be as good as the first Jurassic Park but this movie can't even compare to the disappointed sequel The Lost World. Even though The Lost World wasn't too bad of a movie, it wasn't the best of Steven Spielberg's work. Jurassic Park 3 even falls below par of The Lost World.
The story takes place a 4 years after the events of The Lost World. Sam Neill returns to take the role of Dr. Alan Grant who has just about returned back to his old life. That is until he is approached by a couple Paul and Amanda Kirby. They trick him into joining their crew to look for their son who was lost over the island of Isla Sorna (The second island) during a paragliding accident.
Soon enough, things turn bad and Dr. Alan Grant once again has to keep himself and his peers alive from the horrors of the island. The storyline is pretty weak and the movie doesn't explain anything else about InGen's experiment, the only thing this movie has in common with the first two movies is the characters and setting.
The thrill hardly reached a climax and was a bad excuse at throwing scenes to scary the audience. The special effects didn't improve on what we have already seen in the previous films. The role of the Spinosaurus didn't live up to the hype and besides the scenes with the Raptors, there isn't much expose on other dinosaurus. As I mentioned early, the storyline is weak and it was just about them trying to escape off the island (been done before in Jurassic Park) and along the way being thrown with lame action.
Joe Johnston has done a terrible job at directing this film and I have no idea why the producers would want to make another Jurassic Park after The Lost World, this movies is all about milking all the money possible out of the Jurassic Park franchise. At least they could have given us a more memorable movie that this. It started with a bad note and finished with a bad note, not a movie that you would want to watch, even if your a Jurassic Park fan.
WWF No Mercy (2000)
The best wrestling simulator game.
Before I begin just because I named this game the best wrestling simulator game doesn't mean that it's the best wrestling game. There are two types of wrestling games. Wrestling simulator (WWF Attitude, WWF No Mercy ect.) and the recently developed Arcade Wrestling (WWF Smackdown, WWF Royal Rumble). The clear difference between the two is that Wresling simulators are more in-depth and harder to master.
Now for the review of the game. People who have followed THQ's wrestling game from the start will know that this game is based on the old engine that was used for the WCW games a few years ago, so there's is nothing new about it besides a few tweaks. So if you are a master of those old WCW games then you'll easier pick up on the gameplay of WWF No Mercy. It includes over 60 wrestlers and the basics of game modes such as single, tag, cage, handicap, royal rumble and king of the ring. However included in this game are two gimmick matches, Ladder Match and Special Guest Referee match. Both of which have been borrowed from the WWF Smackdown series.
The graphics of this game are quite good for a Nintendo 64 game however it isn't the best graphics you have ever seen, this also goes for the sounds in the game. Gameplay wise it can be quite fun however it does get fustrating at times when the opponent reverses all your moves after you've been beating of him for 30 minutes. There are many slow-downs in the game especially when there are 4 wrestlers on screen and it gets even worst for a Tag Team Ladder Match.
Included are 10 backstages the hallway, locker room, parking lot, boiler room, sports lounge and the enterance stage for all the events such as Wrestlemania, Summerslam, Smackdown, Raw is War ect. This game is very similar to THQ's previous WWF attempt WWF Wrestlemania 2000, so if you already have WWF Wrestlemania 2000 there really isn't much reason for you to get this until the price drops. The only difference are that there are more wrestlers, the season mode has been improved and there are a few added game modes.
The things holding me back from giving it a perfect 10 is that the game can lag at times, the opponent can fustrate you at times and it simply isn't as fun as WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role. However none the less it is a good game and is the best wreslting simulator on the market.
Star Wars: Episode I - Jedi Power Battles (2000)
Finally I can be a Jedi too!
Upon hearing bad reviews for this game I went out with my friend to rent this game and see what all the fuss is all about. Before I continue I just want to mention that we are both Star Wars fans. From the introduction of the game we were pumped and ready to take on the dark side. We chose Obi-Wan and Gui-Gon and set off for the Federation Ship. The levels that the game takes place in are exactly the same as they are in the movie. From everything from the opening battle scene to the final battle scene with Darth Maul.
Now the graphics for the game aren't the best however they aren't horrible, they are just right. The controls could have done with a better setup because it'll take you a while to get used to the awkward controls. The worst thing about the game is the depth of the game. Depth meaning it's very hard to see how far you have to jump from one platform to another. You'll find yourself repeatly wasting your Jedi to an unnecessary death after surviving a horde of Battle Droids. This is the only reason I'm holding back from giving it a perfect rating of 10. However taking on the role of one of five Jedi makes up for it with 3 other hidden characters, *cough*Darth Maul*cough*.
If you ever wanted to become a Jedi and step into the shoes or shall we say 'robe' of your favourite characters, this is the game for you. It's even more fun taking on the dark side with a friend. If you are worried about replay value, don't worry you won't finish this game overnight. It'll take some hard friday nights with a buddy to complete this and even after completing the game there are still the option to do it all again with the hidden characters.
Along the way you'll unlock a few extra mini-games and they come with extra rewards if you complete them such as the 'Ultimate Saber'. Overall if you are a Star Wars fan this is a game for you however if you aren't then this is nothing more than a rental because if this game was a Star Trek game I wouldn't even have given it a second glance.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Not even worth a rental
I hired The Blair Witch Project from my local Blockbuster expecting a scary movie, it was not. The movie wasn't scary and not enough depth was gone into the story. Basically the whole film just shows scenes with the three teenages hiking through the forest, looking for answers about the Blair Witch. It was over all too soon and there was only maybe one scene that made you twitch a little and I mean twitch, not a jump but a twitch.
Overall I didn't enjoy the film all that much, even with the DVD version and all the added features, I felt robbed of a good watch. All I asked from the film was a decent storyline and at least tell us more about the "Blair Witch" however all we discovered in the course of the film was that the teenages were great at getting lost, hardly anything was known about the "Blair Witch", we didn't even get to know the characters. The angles of the camera were well done and even though it did make me a little queesy I must say that it was perfect for the film but even the great camera angle isn't enough to save this film. So if you want a scary movie, look else where and only watch this film if you must have to.
The Matrix (1999)
No doubt the best Sci-Fi of the decade.
The Matrix is an excellent movie. What makes it an excellent movie? It's excellent and original story line, it's excellent ground-breaking special effects and it's excellent cast. It's a must see for all sci-fi fans and even if your not a sci-fi, it's still a great watch.
What is The Matrix? It's story is set in around the year 2199, where computers/machine/AI have enslaved the entire human race and are using us as a power sorce for them. The AI (Artificial Intelligence) have plugged all humans into a somewhat Virtual Reality computer program (The Matrix) where we live our life in the year 1999 unaware of the real world.
Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne) leads a team of would-be heros to find The Chosen One, who is capable of changing The Matrix to his liking. Keanu Reeves plays Neo, The Chosen One, who with the help of Morpheus and his team try to save the world.
I won't reveal too much of the story for you but it's a great movie that all must watch. Two sequels are planned with The Matrix 2 being planned for a 2002 release and The Matrix 3 for a 2003 release. Let's see if it can life up to the first one.
Two of a Kind (1998)
Pretty good show. Don't know why it was axed?
It's quite a good show, even though I'm not really a big fan of the Olsen twins but I still seem to not get enough of this show. Maybe it's because of Carrie, she's quite a looker. I'm quite disappointed to discover that the show has been axed. The show just started airing in Australia only a few months ago. Well, I guess I'll have to take in every episode that comes my way.
