The Golden Compass (2007)
Just watched the film...
Well, I just previewed the film, and there is simply nothing anti-religious or negative about religion, or even concerning religion in this film. These things may be in the books, but they are absolutely NOT in the film. If you bother to watch it before commenting, you will see that this is the case. It is a straight-up fantasy adventure.
OK, it has some magic, but not even as much as Harry Potter. Like many films, it has apparently moved a long way from the book upon which it is based. In general, it was a pretty good film. The ending was a bit abrupt, and obviously sets up a sequel, but it's a rare movie these days that avoids that issue. Hollywood is in love with sequels.
If you like fantasy adventures, you will probably like this movie. Judge it for yourself.
Volunteers (1985)
Very funny classic
John Candy really shines in this classic. Don't believe the nay-sayers. This is a very funny movie. Besides, Tom Hanks met his wife while filming this picture (she co-stars). If you like Tom Hanks and John Candy, you are sure to enjoy this movie. Rent it or buy it. I watch it often.
It is "R" rated, but mostly for language I think, as there is just one very brief scene of partial nudity. It is not nearly as bad as many present-day movies rated "R", and I would not hesitate to have my grandchildren (11 and 13) watch it.

Waterworld (1995)
Better than many said
Is it a great movie classic like Gone With The Wind? No, but I'd rather watch this movie. It is much more entertaining. It is a pretty straightforward action movie with great background scenery (and great foreground scenery in the person of the female lead). It was not intended to be a serious movie. What's wrong with something that provides excellent entertainment for a couple of hours?
I own it. I have watched it 3 or 4 times since it came out, and I expect I will watch it again once a year or so. I liked it, so sue me.
An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)
Outstanding romance
Roger Ebert once listed this as one of his top two or three romances of all time. I agree. Don't listen to the naysayers who dislike it because it shows the military in a good light. It is the story of a troubled young man who learned about honor and committment. He falls in love for the first time, and he does become an officer and a gentleman. Watch carefully, and you will see him artfully dodge any committments until the end of the movie. More than anything, he learns to quit standing apart and take a chance by putting himself on the line. A wonderful romance. Watch it with someone you love.
