Treasure n tha Hood (2005)
Katt William is the only small redeemable factor
This is the worst movie I can remember watching at the time of this writing. The only good things about this movie were the brief performances of Katt Williams. The plot, pacing and lines were all horrible. The only use I could see for this movie would be as some type of cruel and unusual punishment for prisoners or maybe to make people think you are home while away.
The person who wrote the positive review must have had some type of involvement in the movie. After watching the movie, I can confidently say that the positive review is obviously a plant. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that someone reviewed the script, acting, and pacing of this movie to take out any areas that could actually be enjoyable. This could very well be a deliberate sabotage by those too stupid to realize it.
Never Die Alone (2004)
So close yet so far
As the movie started out, it was almost too painful to watch. I imagine a few people walked out of the theater before realizing its worth. Not everyone is willing to go through the pain to get to the pleasure. If this movie had been imbued with more class and the corny lines were removed, it had the potential to be a classic. Unfortunately, all we are left with is the train who couldn't. The movie tries and you can feel it saying, "I think I can, I think I can". The weight of the opening act and awkward transition from cheese too wine is just too much for it to crest the hill. In the end we are left with nothing more than what if...
What if someone took the time to do this right?
Battlestar Galactica (2003)
A poor script from the ghetto makes good.
This show must have been the product of some fast food franchise in the future; the actors were bland, unmoving and not all that attractive. My God, even the sex scene was ho hum. I was a mild fan of the original series as a child and as I watched the original series premiere I saw all the plot holes, cheesy lines and bad effects that youth blinded me to. The actors carried the story in the original series and you actually cared about them. How you turn a womanizing man with a dynamic personality into an irritating woman with no personality and call it a fresh new spin is beyond me. It seems that this mini-series was created to push a social agenda not entertain.
It would be different if the show pushed some kind of social agenda secondary to the story, (i.e. Will and Grace) but to make it the primary focus while sacrificing the story turns it into propaganda. I am sorry, but I am not going to waste 2 hours of my life on a social infomercial. I sincerely hope the mini-series picks up, but I have scant hope.
--time passes--
I stand by my comments on the mini-series. However, I must eat a lot of humble pie when it comes to the regular series. It has surpassed all of my expectations time and time again.
More napkins please, I am getting crumbs on the floor. ;-(
Children of Dune (2003)
Great, but falls short of it's potential
The best thing that can be said for Children of Dune is that it is an epic tale told with the pacing that a mini-series allows. The acting is better with the new cast and Leto is almost, how I expected him. Additionally, this movie doesn't have the handicap of being compared to David Lynch's 1984 masterpiece.
The cast and crew still don't match the majesty of the Original movie. The Bene Gesserit, Reverend Mothers, Mentats, & Fedaykin do not evoke anything that lets you know that these people are above the average person. Without reading the book, the story is hard to follow and you would think that these special people are merely in categories.
***some mild spoilers***
sandtrout are flat clear/cloudy creatures, Leto covers his whole body except his mouth with them. WHY DO ALL THESE SPECIAL PEOPLE SEEM SO ORDINARY??!?! When Alia inspects the body, she seems dumbfounded. This is a Reverend Mother, how can she be dumbfounded? Leto running around like the "Flash" is cool, but according to the book, knives should just break against his skin which is just as cool. Sadly, none of the actors save Leto evince the Majesty that Herbert brought to life except Leto. I still enjoyed it greatly and would love to see the rest of the books brought to life, but I personally prefer Lynch's vision of the milieu. Fremen in Lynch's version looked like warriors, here they look like boy scouts and what is with the weird pronunciation of words?!?? 8/10
The Art of War (2000)
Suprisingly Good
I thought this movie would barely be a good way to pass a lazy evening due to the low rating and all of the bashing that this movie received. I was extremely surprised at how excellent this movie actually is. Of course there are a few cliches, but there are also some truly great moments. Don't miss this
Dune (1984)
The classic is the best, powerful, evocative, moving and deep
I saw this movie when I was 11, it changed my outlook on life. Some people have problems with this movie. I saw the movie before falling in love with the books. To me the movie was flawless even after reading the book and noting the differences. I recently had the misfortune of watching the new mini-series, despite the special effects it was still horrible. stick with the classic. I never thought I would hear my self say that :-)
