The Goldbergs (2013–2023)

Lazy writing and/or just neglecting research on the '80s
4 February 2014
Yes...some others have said it here before that the people who seem to hate this show the most are the ones who grew up in the '80s. I don't have a problem with a show about the '80s, but it has to be ACCURATE and not lazy. The show has to make me feel like I'm really watching something from the '80s..but this show didn't do that at all. I won't knitpick too much as others have already pointed out the flaws, but here's one example. In one episode, they're talking about watching the TV show "That's Incredible", which stopped airing in 1984 or so. Then in the next 5 minutes, the grandpa talks to the young boy that he should watch "How Harry Met Sally" ....a movie that was released in 1989? Come on....no wonder they keep saying "19 eighty something"...so, that they can just keep the whole decade open to referencing...but you know, it doesn't work that way. There must be consistency in period shows. Do you think 2001 was the same period as 2009? Of course not. Another reviewer pointed out that the boy says the "only one who understands him is Flavor Flav"...get out of here. White people didn't know about Flavor Flav until probably after 1989 or 1990 when Public Enemy really started hitting mainstream ("911 is a joke" was circa 1990). Lazy writing....won't watch it again unless I happen to leave the TV on while I take a nap.

The Purge (I) (2013)
1/10
The story's premise is absolutely ridiculous to even start with!
7 June 2013
I can't believe people would even say that the premise of the movie is intriguing, plausible, or even remotely realistic. Come on! This whole Purge concept fails from its initial premise and that's what makes this movie a failure from the start. Really? A government would actually promote this "purge"? Can you imagine the legal nightmares and ramifications? All crime for 12 hours is legal including murder?? Really?? Gosh, don't even waste your brain cells watching this stupid movie. Let's not forget about all the possible crimes that could take place: celebrity murder, rape (women and children), white collar crimes conducted during the purge would be allowed, burning down towns and national treasures, wait..isn't that enough to make you realize how stupid this is?

Secrets (1977 TV Movie)
8/10
I liked it, even as a very young child
29 May 2009
Now, I know you may wonder how somebody who was about 7 years old can remember such a "racy" movie, but I do remember a lot from this movie. And I remember as a 7 year old thinking that this movie was a bit strange. I only saw this movie once at that time and after all these years, that one scene with the blind piano guy (I just find out he was a piano tuner from the credits)and how Susan Blakely just drops her robe while he's playing the piano. I remember wondering how a blind guy could have heard the robe drop and was thinking if he was really blind at all. haha. Anyways, I just remember thinking, "wow...she is pretty easy" as she almost appeared to be helplessly seducing or being seduced by men. Anyways, I think it was a pretty strong TV movie if I can remember it after more than 30 years. I would buy it or rent if it ever came out on DVD..but usually TV movies don't make it that far.

THIS IS NOT BAD ACTING!! Please remember this...
23 December 2000
Warning: Spoilers
After reading all the critiques and reviews, there's just one thing that all of you have to remember: THE ACTORS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE PORTRAYING TEENS WITH THE SOCIAL MENTALITY OF 7 OR 8 YEAR OLDS. Many critics were saying that the dialogue and the acting was bad, but in actuality, the acting is very good for what the plot called for. Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins were supposed to portray young adults who were 'cut off' from the rest of the world at a very young age. That's why they were supposed to portray two people with the limited education, mentality, vocabulary and speech of 7 or 8 year olds. It would really have been unrealistic if they had more developed dialogue, since they had nobody to further their speech skills on an island with only two people...who were still both mentally children! That is why they show scenes where they sing very incomplete songs, refer to San Francisco as "Sanfarisco", and forget their daily prayers.

In light of all this, I think they did a very good job of acting and the writers did a very decent job of limiting the dialogue to the speech abilities of young children.

However, there are some unbelievable and unexplained scenes, such as the giving birth scene. How do they cut the umbilical chord off?? And some other minor details should have been explained, but overall: A very beautiful and romantic story with a happy ending.

An 8 out of 10.
