Very Funny...NBC erred by not picking it up
This show had a good deal of potential. The writing was pretty sharp and the young ensemble showed a lot of talent. It is a shame that NBC decided to pick up some really lousy shows for '02-'03...this one really could have been fun on Thursday nights. Well, instead we get Good Morning, Miami. Wake up Jeff Zucker!
Under Suspicion (2000)
Some Much There...But Huh?
Freeman. Hackman. And now Belluci. Thomas Jane? (whatever).
**SPOILERS**Anyway, this movie is fascinating, if at times uncomfortable, story. I like the idea of a intense conflict between these two men, without explosions and hollywood special effects. It is about the tension between two of our finest actors. Did Hackman do it? If so, why? Monica Belluci is gorgeous and cold--just as she should be. Jane's character is bascially a waste--a red herring if you will. The movie makes some amazing leaps of faith--the other reviewers chronicle that. I even enjoyed Hopkins' directing--interesting narrative structure...lushly shot...looks great on DVD. However, the ending made almost no sense. I looked over reviews and it still...finally, I put my rented DVD back into the machine and listened to the commentary. In fact, Hopkins and Freeman joke about only the DVD viewers being able to fully comprehend the ending. Ha. Ha. Ha.
SPOILERS!!!!!
The ending it seems was meant to suggest that Freeman (again playing a good cop...how many times does he play this?) was wrong...The scene where Belluci seems to commit suicide? Red herring. In the french original, she "blows her brains out" but decided not to go that way. Why did Hackman confess? Well...to show his wife that he was not a monster...talk about proving a point. He finally breaks at the end. He can't reunite with her. I'm still not buying the ending all that much, but I'm glad I saw the film and the ending was not pat. I admire that, but there is subtle and then there is opaque.
