Them (2021)
Racial horror vs Demon Horror
The trailer alone was enough to sell me on giving this show a go as it's only just come out Friday so not word of mouth of buzz to go on just yet, so let me start it!
First, it's an Anthology show, so just like American Horror story, it's a self contained 10 eps. Second, basic premise, a African American family move to an all white neighbour hood in 1950s America.
It's billed as a horror show and it sure has those moments, psychotic home invaders, ghosts, demons, killer Quakers, creepy kids, evil cheerleaders, serial killers, amputations, cannabilism, kidnapping, and rape. However with all of that, the most impactful element turns out to be hate, racism, misogyny, fear, distrust, and greed, that's where the true horror in the show lies. There are some truest horrific and powerful imagery in this show, you've been warned. It can also be sometimes a little show and doesn't reveal its hand till the 9th episode. I look forward to what series 2 has to say.
Hwerow Hweg (2002)
Seen it, Met the Man, wish I could be positive...
I have seen the English spoken version of Hwerow Hweg, otherwise known as Bitter Sweet. Unfortunately I was rather disappointed. I found the acting rather poor, the music annoying, the script lifeless and story confusing. However there are some good shoots and Antal has made good use of the local areas. I wish I could be more positive about this film as having being taught by him for a few works on screenwriting, you discover the man has, as he likes to call it 'fire in your belly'. Hope his future work has more promise, good luck Antal.
