Dresden (1999)
idiotic, pretentious nonsense masquerading as "art"
this is one of those movies that makes me hate independent film. the big problem i have with a lot of independent films in this country is that they're totally self-important and indulgent -- the filmmakers obviously have no regard for their audience, they just want to make an "artistic statement". "dresden" tries to do so by offering us long shots out of a train window while strange noise (dialogue?) plays in the background. the filmmakers are obviously the kind of people who are much too smart and educated for their own good. did it ever occur to them that this film is actually just not very interesting? this film is a waste of celluloid and certainly a waste of 80 minutes. it could have been shortened to 30 minutes and the effect would have been the same.
What Women Want (2000)
weak, oversimplified, overlong, dull.....
i think the one line summary says it all, really. this movie is pretty weak. it's very predictable, shamelessly pandering, and presents an oversimplified and cutesy picture of male-female relations. it's strange that it's making so much money, because the audience i saw it with was decidedly nonplussed by it. even miss congeniality was better than this. i guess if you like mel gibson you'll enjoy it enough. but i can't really recommend it to anyone else. also, lauren holly? hello? talk about wasted. it was nice to see marisa tomei again, though, because she was quite funny. also, it looks like helen hunt has a really fake tan, and that bothered me throughout the whole thing. yuck.
