Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Solid fun. The lore is too deep to be properly incorporated though.
As a result, people not too familiar with DnD might find things a bit confusing. However, it should not prevent people from properly enjoying the movie as most of the background and context required are explained, though bare minimally.
Chris Pine did a good job being the funny man, kinda charming and glue the team together. Rest of the casts also did a decent job. For some reason I have some issue with how the paladin was portrayed, maybe he appears to be too pretentious to my taste. Also magic is way too powerful in this movie or too simplified, to me that's against the lore. But I understand it's a movie adaptation there's bound to be give and take. One last complaint I have is about the ending, let's just say the last 10 minutes of the movie is extremely "familiar" in terms of storytelling and most people can probably guess what's about to happen.
Still, solid fun and giving it 8 stars. As someone who's familiar with actual DnD lore I'm just glad this is not the 2000 disaster all over again.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Darn it I missed the post credit scene!
Great action, love Reeves and Yen. You can feel the brotherhood and bond, so definitely good acting. The whole Osaka scene was great, seamlessly incorporated bow and arrow into the movie, who knows bullet proof suit can't withstand arrows? But if you think about it it could actually make sense. Paris scene was a bit chaotic, to me it felt a bit too blatant. It's supposed to be a secret society. In previous titles when Wick fights off killers it's been mostly discrete, or at least they try if I remember correctly. NOT IN PARIS. Swarm of killers just hunt Wick openly, might as well do it in broad daylight. Kinda break immersion if you ask me. Also, I'm not sure what's the purpose of the existence of Mr. Nobody, it's an interesting character for sure but felt a bit out of place. The writings failed to incorporate him and elevate him to plot significance. The movie would work with or without him, such a pity because I really like the character, he has a lot of potential to be greater. Last but not least, the main antagonist is just some typical spoiled brat, don't get me wrong the acting was on point, but the character himself is kinda boyish and weak, not a charismatic and strong antagonist I hoped for. Overall great action movies, all the cultures, guns, killings, and bonds are intriguing. Giving it a 9/10.
Death to 2021 (2021)
Super woke garbage
Really woke, as expected.
Brushed off Biden's responsibility of the whole Afghanistan disaster and pinned it on Trump completely. Attack China on refusing to phase out coal completely, but failed to mention India and its determination of not wanting to phase out coal; the host fake cried when INDIA announced their decision for god sake, not a China, let's keep it factual. Failed to mention Biden's "Independence from Virus day" debacle where he announced that COVID it's done and we don't need to wear mask anymore...
Again, don't watch this garbage.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
I can't take this anymore
Why do you corporates have to rehash beloved IP which was good and make it trash? I mean seriously the original trilogy was so good, granted the last 2 especially epilogue was a bit too self-aware but that's night and day away from being trash, and Resurrections is pure trash. You can't just throw in a bunch of "new and hip" elements into movies and hope it's gonna be good without any regard of the original tone, I mean do you c suite executives really need to put zombie aka swarm into a matrix movie? For god sake stop killing beloved IP from the past, at this rate what's left of our childhood/teenage years will be nothing but Sesame Street.
Malignant (2021)
I feel like James Wan is trolling with this one.
OK, have mixed feelings on this film. I genuinely believe James Wan is trolling with this film, it's just too dumb and ridiculous to not be trolling. For example, the house where the main characters live looks super small from outside, however the in-house scenes showcase 40 by 40 living room and 30 feet ceiling, I mean this is either sloppiness or James Wan being not giving a f because his Aqua man made $10bn. Dialogue were ridiculously over the top, ridiculous and borderline stupid. Also James Wan's wife help write the script and was casted in the movie as well, made it feel like passion project which James Wan used to please his new wife. Just realized I used the word ridiculous too many times, not my fault though because this word perfectly describe the movie.
How to Become a Tyrant (2021)
Super shallow and one-sided
I know I know, it's Netflix, not history channel, it's all about entertainment not context, historical accuracy, or actually educating the masses. Still, this is rather disappointing as I was wishing for something more, let's say, contextualized and brave, instead of this typical "the world is black and white" rehash of Hollywood brainwash formula.
To conclude, it's too generic, shallow, and one-sided. Not recommending to anyone who cares enough to learn history, or learn "how to become a tyrant."
Ne Zha zhi mo tong jiang shi (2019)
Great stuff
Very exotic while the aesthetic definitely wouldn't turn western audience off. Great animation, you can tell the budget is substantial, I would say that the production value is at least on par with Pixar. Surprisingly good film.
The Last Days of American Crime (2020)
I tried, I really tried.
Tried really hard to watch it, just couldn't finish the film. Give it 30 minutes and anyone with a sane mind will tap out. It's just so slow and boring. Even if the film picks up later on, which I wouldn't know because I just couldn't finish it, it wouldn't be worth it for the torture you have to endure to get there.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Julia Fox
I don't know what to say. Julia Fox looks magnificently hot in that lingerie. Won't be able to get that frame out of my mind now.
Oh and movie's good too. Adam Sandler proves himself to be a great actor when he wants to try. Story's slow, but intense, with lots of twists and turns. If I'm gonna be honest here, though, it's too obvious how this movie's gonna end.
The Witcher (2019)
Average. Shines at some spots with apparent flaws.
I don't understand why so many people rate this show 9 and 10. I want a new season too but we gotta be honest so that they can make the show better.
Pros: good fighting scenes, good acting, story somewhat close to the novels.
Cons: timeline is just messy. I mean the book can pull that off but a show? I don't think so. Also Gerald and Yennefer romance develops too fast. Nilfgaardian armor looks like trash. Also, too much emphasis on the mage. True the books cover mage and politics in length but this is a show with limited run time, personally I think it could be beneficial to shift more focus on Gerald and his witchering.
I don't even want to touch those subtle sjw clues, ew.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Decent sify, terrible Star Wars
Seriously, this movie in my opinion is not as bad as many reviewers say it is. However, I understand why it's reviewed so terribly - it's just not very Star Wars, not at all. Plot holes everywhere, characters make counterintuitive decisions, and toy commercials make the film a bit too, well, confusing and off-putting for Star Wars fans.
6 Underground (2019)
Explosion is fun, girls are hot and all but the pacing is just way off.
I just can't in good spirit rate this anything higher than 6. First 20 minutes were basically straight action with no disposition or meaning, story picks up only after second half. Also humor falls flat big time. Pure action film with nothing else to offer.
Born in China (2019)
This is just way too hypocritical.
One child policy absolutely caused unimaginable social-economical issues on a grand scale which directly affect literally a billion people. But this movie is simply too hypocritical. The whole film focuses on how bad it is to force abort and kill babies, which I absolutely agree. But in the end the true nature of the movie and the director is revealed as she turned the angle to US and started spewing her hot take on some states restricting abortion, you know, the whole "my body my choice" argument. So do you condemn killing baby or not? Are you, the director, saying that it's NOT OK to kill baby unless it's the mother doing the killing? In China, government forces abortion and kill baby and that is NOT OK, but in the US, some state governments decide to stop abortion/killing baby and that's wrong? Again, here is my question, do you actually value human life or not?
The Boys (2019)
True greatness
My god this is so great! Gory, wild, mature. A tad predictable but still refreshing enough. Absolutely stunning piece of television entertainment. All acting are pretty on point, the scenario seems plausible enough to be "real," think about it, we are all human and when human obtain absolute power bad thing happens. BTW, from what I heard from my friend, this is already toned down compares to original comic which kinda blew my mind.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Just bad. Invincible study abroad Mary Sue came back to home planet on recruit difficulty
Once upon a time, a seemingly fun woman studied galactic warfare in a galactic superpower. Eventually, she became a stony and emotionless wimmin. After she finished her training, she was fortunate enough to be able to travel back to her home planet, and apply her super power plus superior galactic infiltration skill set and fought a bunch of weaklings in no way comparable even remotely to her power.
