Tekkon kinkurîto (2006)
4* C Rulz.
Fantastic tale by Arias and the 4* C studio. The film's innocent style encourages a false sense of security that is brilliantly torn to shreds at its climax.
Sharp Objects (2018)
Stark and lovely.
Deft handling of the subject matter and a compelling lead by Adams. Unfortunately, the superbly crafted story is undermined by an ending that seems to come from nowhere. A great pity in an otherwise near-flawless tale.
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
Brooding masterwork
The solid casting catapults the viewer into Coppola's uncanny and surreal vision. Reeves' pitch-perfect buffoonery as Harker is perhaps undermined by Rider's two-dimensional Mina.
Otherwise, a classical tale that hits all the right notes.
A Cure for Wellness (2016)
Bottled goodness.
A visionary and cautionary tale gone awry. The imagery, narrative, and characters all have a great weight and fashion a well-wrought, sinister tale.
Goth's Hannah steals the show.
Dredd (2012)
"I am the Law."
A well needed reboot for the iconic Dredd. The visual style drips with respect for the source material, while the taut plot leaves little out of place.
Monsters: Dark Continent (2014)
Curious rocket
A bleak future told in two distinct voices. The first half struggles against its own bulk as a soldier-move narrative, but acurious second half effortlessly lifts the film into a more metaphysical realm that rewards the persistent.
Akira (1988)
Bold. Unapologetic.
If Princess Mononoke is The Star Wars of anime, Akira is its 2001: A Space Odyssey. Although Akira went bankrupt at the cinema, its heady, pulsing, fever dream stands the test of time.
Herald of a new era.
