I thought I knew what to expect but half way through I knew I loved this movie...and loved Wink!
15 June 2021
I stereotyped it before I even saw it. Starting it I was like ok this is the Devil Wears Prada...right? It had more story than I expected, more beauty than I expected, more subtlety than I expected and I knew I loved this movie when I knew I loved Wink the Dog. I thought all the actors did a great job. I was impressed at the actor that played Horace.....is that name right? Last I had seen him in was Richard Jewell which was so serious but in this movie he had more comic talent than I expected from him. I had never heard the song from Iggy Pop before but now I find myself singing it. I loved loved this movie. I'm excited to watch it over and over again.

The most "memorable" Transformer movie
19 June 2019
I do not understand the negative reviews. It may be that I am just old. I watched the cartoon as a kid. I collected transformer toys as a kid. My favorite toys were Grimlock and Ravage. This movie brought back such childhood nostalgia. I think this one is the best modern Transformer movie and the best Transformer movie since the animated 'Transformers The Movie'. It also tied the modern movies together showing Cybertron before during the war and explaining Bumblebee's voice. I noticed that Bumblebee did play 'The Touch' by Stan Bush that was originally from the animated Transformers The movie (later used in another movie.... I think I was Boogie Nights with Burt Reynolds but I don't know. I am referencing a podcast called Film Spotting that said the song was in that movie) Anyway, I really enjoyed this movie because it worked for me. It brought back such memories of my childhood. I might add that I love movies in general and I recently rewatched E. T. The Extra Terrestrial before watching this and I felt they strangely played together for my mind. Anyway, I just wanted to share how I thought this movie was very enjoyable in contrast to the negative reviews. I don't even like to share reviews which might tell you something.

It's a statement about the church as well as a movie
18 May 2006
This movie makes a statement about Joseph Smith, what he stood for, and what the LDS church believes. With all the current media coverage of a certain fugitive people have confused the LDS church with the FLDS church and criminal fugitive Warren Jeffs. Jeffs is Not associated with the LDS church yet media groups internationally have asked for comments about Jeffs from The LDS church. Jeffs is not mentioned in the movie at all but I think that it is ironic that this movie with all it's points about Joseph also point away from the fews of the FLDS church and their leader at this time in the media world. This is a movie about Joseph Smith and a great one at that. Some of the most obvious differences between Jeffs and Joseph is portrayed in Joseph's humanity, acceptance and love. Jeffs views and opinions differ greatly from Joseph Smith and the LDS Church and it is seen in this movie. Jeffs thinks of the "Negro" as devils. Joseph Smith knew they were children of god and gave up his wife's favorite horse to a African American (former slave) to buy his son's freedom. Joseph is shown doing housework for his wife Emma and is criticized by a member until Joseph tells him that a man may lose his wife in the next life if she chooses not to stay with her husband and that doing chores is a way to help and cherish your wife. Jeffs brought one of his polygamist wives to her knees in front of a class full of students by grabbing her braid and twisting it painfully till she came to her knees. Lastly Joseph participated with law enforcement and sought aid from the government at all times. Jeffs thumbs his nose at government and flees at all times.

I loved this movie and if you don't know much about Joseph Smith and what the LDS church believes, then this is the movie to see. And if you had confused the LDS Church with the FLDS church then you really need to get your act together. We are not much different from anyone who believes in Jesus Christ, the Sanctity of marriage and the family, as well a patriotic to our homeland and country. We are all different as well just like you can find different protestants, Presbyterians, methodist, baptist and Catholics. What's important is our message and what we stand for. This movie trys to portray that but there is so much of Joseph's life that can't be covered in a mere 2 hour movie. This was a really great show.

Beautiful haunting film
17 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I checked out this movie because I was looking for a film similar to Miyazaki's animated films. I was warned by my sister that this was a very very sad film but I decided to watch anyway.

The first time I watched it I was completely haunted by the what if's that ran through my mind as other possibilities for a possible happy ending.

Also the little girl Setsuko is so much like my own daughter and the fact that the older brother takes care of her...I found the story disconcerting because I have an older son and a little girl. I kept putting my children's faces over these animated characters faces.

There is such a reality and innocence in the animated film that is sometimes overlooked but in this film it shines through. There are little things like the girl swinging her legs as she sits down on a train bench and crying as her brother pokes her (probably because her aunt just told her that her mother died) just shows some sweet drama of life that can be beautiful and you want to hold onto it. You want to keep these characters in your heart and not let go or at least I did.

That said it was so sad that I determined not to watch it again, for the pain that I felt for these characters was real. I knew from my readings that lack of food was a major problem in Japan after WW II. I knew that things like this could have happened. Problem was I couldn't get the movie out of my mind so I decided to look more into it and study the movie and anything that was said about it. When I found out it was based loosely on a true story I decided to watch it again with my children. I felt like my children needed to know that there is suffering in the world. They were not affected as much as I was the first time.

I understood it so much more the second time I watched it. The beginning made so much more sense to me the second time that I enjoyed it more.

This is a beautiful movie and story. I recommend watching it and talking about it with your loved ones but at of course your own discretion.

Not as good as the first
17 April 2006
I give it a 5 because I was laughing so hard still but I thought that the story and plot were severely and extremely lacking. I didn't appreciate the double meaning swear word jokes with my 3 year old daughter. This one seemed a bit more...for mature audiences though kids will still like it for it's visual eye candy entertainment and occasional slap stick comedy. It seemed like we were seeing Scrats movie every five minutes. I also didn't think the villain characters were very dimensional. They looked evil and they were without anything said at all. Parts of the story were very predictable. But on the whole I rather enjoyed it. It had some very funny lines and parts to it that kept me going well through the movie.

likable from a mormon
17 April 2006
I think this is the best Jesus movie I've ever seen even if I don't agree with all the facts shown. I love long movies and I wish my church would come out with a long dramatization of Jesus's life and work. I love this movie. I try to watch it every year at easter like I did when I was little. Other movies I'd recommend are the "Ten Comandments" (1956), "The Testaments" (put out by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, not yet available on video at this time but seen at a temple visitor's center), "Finding Faith in Christ" (Though it is too short, also put out by The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints), "The Restoration" (by the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints).
