Ghajini (2008)
Amir's waterloo?
How did this picture ever got made, even more astonishing is that how did Amir Khan agree to act? I am so stunned by the awfulness of this movie that my hands have frozen, I just cant understand what were they thinking? Its amazingly bad doesn't even deserve a review.
All i can say is that the lead actress goes home with some credit to her name. Technical this movie is severely flawed with special emphasize on the editing. A R Rehman's music is surprisingly flat. If you want to take one thing positive out of this film then it is Amir khan's dedication to his role for which he trained for more then 10 months.
Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam (2008)
Intellectual Rubbish
A very Bad remake of a Very good Mel Brooks comedy To Be Or Not To Be.
The movie has tried to be very Intellectual but is a a pure Rubbish. Using Bombay serial blasts as a backdrop for the plot the movie tries to show a nexus between Politics, Police, Underworld and Bollywood thru comedy. They have also tried to emphasize that any cultural censorship is the bed rock of decent, quoting "Where one burns books, one will soon burn people." Heinrich Heine
In a fictitious town of St Louis ( how unimaginative ) of Goa a group of theater actors are recruited to intercept a consignment of RDX which is suppose to be used in Bombay serial Blasts. This is would be very insulting to the families of the blast victims. Imagine a comedy made about 9/11.
The promoters of the film may point out that in the original Hitler was the nemesis but the context was entirely different. And in their lies the difference.
What a waste of such talented bunch of actors.
Sarkar Raj (2008)
Ram Gopal Varma's Redemption
With Sarkar Raj Ram Gopal Varma has redeemed himself. The camera work is fantastic. Cinematographer's use of light and specially sunlight is fabulous. At times you actually visualize that chess pieces are moving on a chess board of Politics
The story begins with plans of building a huge power plant in Maharashtra which will displace around 40,000 people. Subhash Nagre (Amithabh) initially opposes the project because earning the err of people in the area, but his son Shankar (Abhishek) convinces him to take tough decisions for the betterment of the public in the long term.
With this the duo and Anita (Aishwarya) the CEO of the project move to the interiors of Maharashtra to explain the benefits of the project to the general Public. For this they also rope in Subhash Nagre's old teacher in Politics Rao Saheb (Dilip Prabhavalkar) But just as things start moving up Rao Saheb's Grandson Sanjay Somji (Rajesh Shringarpore)opposes the project as it would only benefit Bombay at the price of local farmers. Seeing the opposition in Maharashtra Kantilal Vora (Upendra Limaye) wants to shift the project to Gujarat, much to the dismay of Shankar.
A stage is set for a power struggle between the have's and the have not's. Will Shankar be able to keep the power project in Maharashtra, will he be able to keep his credibility with masses or will he have to back down.
Is this about power project or just petty politics or something much bigger, nothing seems to be as it appears.
Saawariya (2007)
Genes doesn't get u success
Too many cooks spoil the broth, that is the best way one can describe this movie.
We have the so called cream of Indian film makers involved, arguably the first family of Indian cinema "The Kapoor Family", Anil Kapoor and last but not the least, the very talented Sanjay Leela Bhansali. And all of them together screwed-up
The very Moulin Rogue treatment given to the film was just bearable but the clueless leads were difficult to watch. Neither Randhir Kapoor Nor Sonam Kapoor can convince us about their characters. Salman was pretty much wasted on the film you could have but a statue instead of him and that would'nt had made any difference. The only little grace that you can take from this movie is Rani Mukharjee, who also plays the narrator in the film. My guess is Salman and Rani were used more as safety nets for the film rather then for their acting capabilities. But even they couldn't save the film. And Mr Bhansali plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz stop putting so many songs in your films. We get it that more songs might give you more revenues from the audio sales but don't kill the movie for it.
White Nights" is a Russian short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky, originally published in 1848 and used by Bhansali as his source material. The story is about Raj(Randhir Kapoor/ and Sakina(Sonam Kapoor/Nastenka) who meet each other one night. They develop a good friendship and Raj inevitably falls in love with this Beautiful girl. However Sakina has a secret she has been secretly waiting for her lover Imaan(Salaman). She Tells Raj that in two days time her lover is going to come for her ending her year long wait. Raj is devastate but continues to be her friend and Raj gets more and more involved and eventually confesses his love for her. Sakina dismisses it as another of his mischiefs. On the night when Sakina is suppose to come to meet her lover she waits for him with Raj and as time passes by she begins to doubt Imaan's intentions much to the pleasure of Raj. But neither one knows how will the night end, will friendship become love?, will true love triumph? or worse will friendship become a compromise?
In the end a bad use of good artistic talent.
