Love Is Blind (2020)
More like: Love is Drunk - a perfect anti-rom-com
I've just realised why I love to watch this show: it absolutely smashes into pieces the whole concept of romantic love as it's understood in the Western culture. It's a perfect anti-rom-com! Also, I would love to see a study that would proof my hipothesis: the probability of any given couple to get engaged is proportional to their alcohol intake. My impression is that they're all more that tipsy all the time. Girls starting their day with mimosas and then taking off to fall in love and get married. Guys seem to start drinking more a bit later into the show, but boy oh boy, then they become more than emotionally available and start sharing, completely oblivious to the fact that it's not the safe space of a friends home or a therapist office - it's actually all going to be aired and judged by the Internet. Also - how do they "fall in love" and decide to marry without asking basic questions about religion, abortion or money?! A perfect recipe for a disaster.
Sis dies corrents (2021)
Real places, real people, real situations
Twenty years ago, when I was a student, I spent one summer working in a bar in Catalunya, where Peps and Valeros would come for their morning coffee and their evening beer. This movie feels like a documentary to me.
The writing and the acting are beyond natural. And just like in life, there are moments in this movie when you laugh, moments when you're fed up with someone or feel sorry for them, and moments when you end up a bit bored.
The languages spoken are actually Catalan, Spanish and Maroccan Arab (I suppose...).
And yes, it is about migration, tolerance, diversity, but far from cheap moralism.
