England Is Mine (2017)
Low key but credible. One for the fans
A very credible evocation of 70s Manchester and the painfully shy and insecure young Morrissey. Perhaps one for Smiths fans who lived through the era. I was one and really enjoyed this low key biopic.
Mid90s (2018)
Loved it - great cast and downbeat vibe make for engrossing skater pic
Great cast and a really convincing verite style contribute to a really enjoyable and engrossing come of age tale involving a lonely kid in LA - in the mid 1990s - befriending a bunch of stoner skaters. Jonah Hill's directorial debut.
Errementari (2017)
Unmitigated tosh
Unmitigated tosh. The terrible dubbed American English dialogue made it even worse. Both boring and ridiculous. I cannot think of any redeeming features.
Eighth Grade (2018)
Perfectly captures teen angst
A big hearted, touching and funny exploration of the agonies of being a 13 year old. Stick with it and you'll be richly rewarded
Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
Funny, big-hearted and totally endearing
A quirky, big-hearted, eccentric and somewhat surreal New Zealand film which chronicles an odd couple on the run. The actors are all engaging and this is a very original, funny, heartwarming tale. The film's unaffected natural performers are at the heart of what makes this so much fun and so endering.
The Squeeze (1977)
Good cast + loads of wonderful late 1970s London location shots
Whilst it's no Get Carter or Long Good Friday it has a good cast and some great performances and loads of wonderful late 1970s London location shots.
Overall though it doesn't really hang together and the score has aged especially badly.
Still, for anyone who, like me, enjoys old episodes of The Sweeney for a bit of gritty 1970s culture and old location shots, The Squeeze is another must see.
