The Wire (2002)
As god as it gets
This show is as good as it gets for a detective series.
Season 1 is a flawless masterpiece in terms of plot, progression and photography. The show is refreshingly devoid of cliche, but the ones used are well-played and incorporate nicely into the story.
The following seasons are not just "the same old", but they have a character of their own even when bringing up familiar faces.
The Wire is a unique and well executed series that doesn't even compare to all the other competitors in this genre.
Chernobyl (2019)
Too Hype
The series does a lot of things right and manages to capture the viewer with a plot that's already gone down in history. The progression of plot and photography are both on point, but there are some oversights and errors, so in the end this show is above average, not a 10-out-of-10 masterpiece.
The story obviously takes place in the former Soviet Union, but everyone speaks English. That would be fine if it was all English throughout, however Russian is used at times. Also the British accent is odd, especially since some characters have a strong Russian accent.
There also are some poorly used stylistic devices, such as the General and the Scientist standing on top of a building's roof to watch the evacuation, and continuity errors such as the workers' flashlights stopping to function at the end of one episode as a cliffhanger, but being operational without explanation in the next episode.
Furthermore, some scenes with CGI look funny (poor color grading, unrealistic smoke effects) and personally, I'm not a huge fan of constant mumbling within dialogue.
These are minor annoyances, but they stand out so much because if it weren't for those, this show really had the potential to become a 10-out-of-10 timeless masterpiece.
Guava Island (2019)
A short too long
Talent and plot capture your mind, the cinematography is pleasing. Characters show little to no development throughout the movie, which is tragic because this leaves us with a movie that is neither short nor feature length. After watching, I felt underwhelmed considering the runtime of more than 50 minutes. I wish there were 30-45 more minutes to allow for character and plot development, or 20 less minutes of musical and reinforcing plot elements.
